Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
Hayan Park is the main protagonist in Lina Im and Jeonghyeon Kim’s WEBTOON series Unholy Blood, or White Blood in Korea. At the beginning of the series, Hayan appears to be a normal teenage girl raised by her adoptive father. However, she has a dark secret. Hayan is a vampire living in a world where they are absolutely hated. Father Michael helped her gain control of that side of her, and she was able to live a mostly normal life.
After his murder, Hayan vows to uncover the truth behind her past and take down those responsible for it. This leads Hayan on a journey that unlocks her past and powers and gives her a chance to change the future for the better. From undercover cops with charm to members of the elite Vampire society, Hayan gains friends and enemies that help her along the way. And all of this while she still tries to maintain the appearance of an everyday life for her two adopted siblings and the rest of society.
The Real Deal:
Hayan Park is the real deal. She is a kickass Vampire queen on a mission. But she is more than brawns. She has some pretty serious brainpower working for her. When her brute Vampire strength isn’t enough to take down an opponent, she can outthink them and come up with a way to help her. But Hayan is also good to a fault. She is willing to let herself take the brunt of the fight in order to protect everyone around her. Even people who are simply against her because she is a vampire. Hayan has a heart of gold and a fist made of steel.
Why She Matters:
So, why does Hayan Park matter? Over the years, strong female protagonists have become increasingly prevalent in mainstream media. And while WEBTOON has been one of the platforms where we see so many series featuring them, they are still the minority. Hayan gives us a positive representation that we love to see. Everything she does is for her family. She could easily walk away from her adoptive siblings and late adoptive father and enjoy her life. But protecting them and uncovering the truth means more. Hayan is strong in her own right, and while she gets support along her journey, she is the one driving it forward.
So, be like Hayan. Be strong in the face of danger, protect your friends and family, be proud of yourself and stand by your beliefs.
