Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on the women who inspire us. Each week, we will highlight a favorite female character or creator of geeky media. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains possible spoilers for Arrow up to the season 7 finale. If you are not caught up with the series, then you may not want to read on, but if you don’t care about spoilers either way, then continue!
Felicity Smoak
Fast Facts:
Arrow‘s Felicity Smoak (played by Emily Bett Rickards) is the ultimate Geek Girl! A graduate of MIT, Felicity jumped into the Arrowverse during season one of Arrow. She is a tech genius, protector of Team Arrow, wife of the Green Arrow aka Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and mother to future superheroes of Star City.
Felicity started as a hacker/IT specialist at Queen Consolidated but by the end of season two, she had become much more. Her friendship with Oliver blossomed into romance, but like every superhero story, there were some bumps in the road. Felicity remained loyal to Oliver and Team Arrow regardless. She took on the alias of Overwatch to keep her identity safe when assisting the team. And eventually became the Queen of the Arrowverse when she married Oliver after the Crisis on Earth-X crossover.
The Real Deal:

Felicity invented tech devices for both Team Arrow and Team Flash that help in their crime fighting efforts. She often collaborates and consults with Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) which is fun to watch. Both are known for throwing out many pop culture references that solidifies her Geek Girl status.
She is also a great gal pal. Felicity was one of only three ladies invited to Iris West’s (Candice Patton) bachelorette party, turned investigation. That wasn’t the only Girl Power night of Felicity’s career. She also led the Canaries in a Birds of Prey episode to save Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) from herself. Felicity’s intuition is always spot on. And she always knows the right thing to say in any situation.
Overall, she is a protector. Felicity loves her family and that includes everyone in the Arrowverse. She is always putting everyone’s needs above her own. And now she has a child to raise in a world that is far too dangerous for them. Unfortunately, she has to do it all alone. Oliver made a deal during the last crossover that will take his life in the next. But Felicity is a strong woman. She understands his sacrifice, even though it’s heartbreaking. She is known to pick up the broken pieces and keep going, staying positive the entire way.
Why She Matters:

Felicity matters because she is the heart of Team Arrow. Bad things happen that break people apart. Felicity is the glue that keeps everyone together. She trusts her husband to do the right thing, and she trusts his team to always have his back. Even in the face of death, Felicity will look on the bright side to keep everyone’s spirits up.
We know how Felicity’s story ends. She has sacrificed so much for the good of the world. That includes not being able to see her kids grow up. She was eventually reunited with daughter, Mia (Katherine McNamara) and step-son William (Ben Lewis). Upon their reunion, she saw the good people they became and the heroes they will become. So it’s fitting that Felicity was confident enough to leave Earth to be with Oliver for good.
Felicity left behind a legacy of innovation. She will be remembered fondly as the awkwardly smart lady behind the computer. But to Arrowverse fans, she will be remembered as brilliant. So be like Felicity Smoak and geek out!
