Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following post may contain spoilers for the Netflix series, Lucifer.
Ella Lopez
Fast Facts:
Ella Lopez (played by Aimee Garcia), aka Miss Lopez is such a fun Geek Girl, in many ways. She’s smart and intuitive, using her brain and her hunches to solve murders. She’s fun and gets excited about a lot of things. Her cosplay skills have come in handy in some cases. The LAPD’s most energetic forensic scientist is probably the only human on Lucifer with the most faith in God (Dennis Haysbert). The Big Guy and Ella have always had a great relationship, even when she was mad at him. Yet, throughout the series, she has never caught on that one of her besties, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) is the Devil.
Not a lot has been revealed about Miss Lopez prior to meeting the Devil. We know that she has a big family … some with questionable professions. She is always upbeat and positive about her job and her friends’ lives. But even the most positive person has some dark times. In Lucifer season four, Miss Lopez’s faith was tested. And in season five, her self-confidence was test. Through any trials and tribulations, Miss Lopez has always known she is loved.
The Real Deal:
Miss Lopez is also a loyal friend to Chloe (Lauren German), Dan (Kevin Alejandro), Amenadiel (D. B. Woodside) and Lucifer. From the moment anyone meets Miss Lopez, she becomes your best friend. Yes, she gets mad at those said friends from time to time but she loves them so much that she can’t stay mad for long. She is supportive of everyone’s decisions in life, but rarely asks for advice on her own.
Ella’s faith makes her a rare breed. She knows God is there. She knows He is watching over her. There is no doubt in her mind that God will guide her to do good. And she does all of this in a way that’s not overbearing to others. I like this Christian girl.
Like most people, Miss Lopez has her low points. But her friends are always there to remind her how valued she is. Ella and Dan became great friends after hooking up one night. He knew she was struggling with something and reminded her that she is a light in a world of darkness. God told her the same thing, even though she didn’t know he was the Big Guy at the time.
Everyone has a dark side. But Ella seems to think that her dark side is darker than anyone else. Maybe that’s why she’s so bubbly. And the only darkness we’ve seen in her is her excitement over gruesome murders. And her taste in men. Ella loves the bad boys, but … come on … who doesn’t? Ella is working through her issues with Dr. Linda (Rachael Harris), so she should be okay.
Why She Matters:
Ella Lopez is a great role model for all girls interested in science and death. Trust me, we’re out there. She likes a good puzzle, which makes her a great forensics investigator. And the fact that blood and gore doesn’t bother her makes her seem a lot more fun that most nerdy girls. With her celestial friends, Miss Lopez is someone you definitely want on your side.
So be more like Ella Lopez. Be Nerdy! Get excited about Science, Cosplay, and Murder. And don’t be afraid to have faith!
