Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media, but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Killjoys up to the end of Season 3. If you are not caught up with the Syfy show, then you may not want to read on, but if you don’t care about spoilers either way, then continue!
Yalena “Dutch” Yardeen
In The Quad, there is one reigning police force: The Reclamation Apprehension Coalition (RAC). Yalena “Dutch” Yardeen (portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen) is a Level 5 RAC Agent, the highest known rank attainable (there is a rumored, top-secret Level 6, though). She is qualified to take on the high hit warrants (the kill warrants) and leads a crew of lower ranked RAC agents, brothers John (Aaron Ashmore) and D’Avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane).
The Real Deal
Dutch was extremely wealthy as a child, but her family fell into disgrace and she grew up in a harem. While learning proper etiquette and what was required to marry a prince, a man named Khlyen began tutoring her in the ways of being an assassin and spy. After presumably killing her prince husband, Dutch fled to The Quad and ended up a RAC agent where she kicks ass serving warrants or protecting her friends.
During the course of their work, the Hullen, a secret organization led by a microbial hive goo, was discovered to have infiltrated the RAC and some of the upper elite in The Quad. As former military, D’Avin had been exposed, which ultimately helped Dutch and their resistance team gain an inside track on what was going on, allowing them the ability to fight back. It turns out that the goo-infested leader of the invading force is Aneela (also portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen) physically identical to Dutch because Dutch was literally born from Aneela’s memories as a fully formed child through the use of the green goo. Yes, Dutch was plucked from a memory and given physical form! Dutch has her own personality, though, and she abhors everything to do with Aneela and the Hullen.
Why She Matters
Dutch is a very independent woman, sometimes too much so for her own good. She is headstrong and knows how to hold her own in an argument. As a leader, Dutch is loyal to and protective of her team. She is well educated and knows when to let it show. Sure, Dutch is an assassin by training and a bounty-hunter by trade, but her moral compass points toward good and she uses her skills to fight oppression. All of these characteristics make Dutch a worthy role model and someone sublimely suited for the title #WomanCrushWednesday.
