Updated on:

Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. This not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media, but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel

Fast Facts:

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan, Carol Susan Jane Danvers was first introduced as an officer of the Air Force in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in March of 1968. Extremely intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind, Carol was later expanded to be a larger part. She became Ms. Marvel for most of her history, after her colleague Mar-vell’s Kree DNA seeped into hers after an explosion. It was because of the explosion that she gained super strength, flight, physical durability, a limited precognitive “sixth sense”, and even a resistance to most toxins.

She’s used the names Ms. Marvel, Binary, and Warbird with her new-found powers. It wasn’t until 2012 in Avenging Spider-Man #9 that she finally accepted the mantle of Captain Marvel. Since then, she has become one of the most powerful beings in the universe, being dubbed “Marvel’s biggest female hero” and “quite possibly Marvel’s mightiest Avenger”. And her powers are no lie.

The Real Deal:

Given Carol’s military background, she’s incredibly tough on crime. She will fight tooth and nail to keep the world safe – even if it means making the hard choices like arresting her friends. She doesn’t just save people on Earth either, she saves beings around the galaxy. She’s a natural-born leader, usually ending up in positions of power such as director of S.W.O.R.D and factions of Avengers. And though she may have alien DNA in her, the human heart inside of her steers her towards compassion and love.

With her Kree abilities, she’s often said to be one of the most powerful heroes in all of Marvel comics. Maybe even stronger than the Hulk. She can fly at six times the speed of sound, discharge radiant energy through her hands, and can absorb many other forms of energy, including electricity, to make her even more powerful. She’s even been able to withstand pressure of 92 tons (184,000, pounds), though it’s unsure if that’s her limit. Honestly, she’s just incredibly strong. Additionally, she’s excellent at hand-to-hand combat, an expert marksmen and a hell of a pilot.

Why She Matters:

“This isn’t a question of what I’m not. This is a question of who I could be.”

Carol is a model for leadership. Though her super-strength helps, it’s her determined attitude that continues to advance her in life. She trusts her instincts and believes in her convictions, even when everyone else doesn’t. She will also go out of her way to save people because that’s what she believes she’s meant to do. It’s because of all this that heroes will follow her into battle and fight by her side. And it’s why it reminds us to believe in ourselves and believe in our abilities. We may fall down, but we need to soldier on. Carol is an incredible force of nature and continues to inspire legions of heroes and fans alike. Be like Carol – believe in yourself.
