Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation. I highly suggest watching Masters of the Universe: Revelation first before diving in. Binge all five episodes here!

Andra (voiced by Tiffany Smith) is a mercenary alongside Teela (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation. She joins the adventure after Teela has left the royal guard following the events of the battle at Greyskull. Together they travel Eternia taking on jobs here and there for coin. When we first meet Andra, they are stealing back a magical glove for a local temple.

When Sorceress (voiced by Susan Eisenberg) and Evil-Lyn (voiced by Lena Headey) requested that Teela seek out and reforge the Sword of Power, Andra was ready for adventure. Using her mechanical skills, she helps the team with their mission through Subternia and Preternia. She even comes up with a few ideas to help fight off fear monsters and use He-Ro’s (voiced by Phil Lamarr) tower as a forge strong enough to recraft the Sword of Power.

The Real Deal:

Andra is the real deal. She may come off as naive and new to the whole adventuring world, but she isn’t in over her head. Andra is excited to travel Eternia and experience adventuring life instead of learning about it through Teela’s stories. But she isn’t just along for the ride; Andra can take care of herself. She is a mercenary with skills in both hand-to-hand combat and as an engineer.

During her time in both Subternia and Preternia, she used her skills with technology to help the heroes. Andra isn’t just brains and brawns. She is a trustworthy and reliable companion to those around her. Andra stands by her friends and even helps to be the guiding voice that convinces Teela to take on the Sorceress’ mission. She always has her friend’s best interests at heart and even more so when it means she gets to go on an adventure.

Why She Matters:

Why does Andra matter? For a plethora of reasons. One, she is just simply marvelous. She’s smart, adventurous and ready to throw down when needed. She also serves the important role of being the new character in Masters of the Universe: Revelation. New viewers of the franchise can see themselves in her as she learns about Teela’s old adventures and more about the world of Eternia. But most importantly, Andra is the first character of color within the franchise. She brings much-needed diversity to the long-beloved series.

So, be like Andra. Always be looking for adventure, be true to yourself and your friends and fangirl right alongside her about this fantastic franchise!
