During the Gears of War 4 livestream, Microsoft announced the popular video game franchise is in development to bring to the big screen, again.

This isn’t the first time a Gears of War film has been announced, back in 2007 it was in development by New Line with Len Wisemen attached as director.  That deal fell apart in 2010 and all hope seemed lost.  Now it’s back, this time being developed with Universal.

The Gears of War series is an adrenaline and, originally, testosterone fueled story set on the devastated planet Sera.  The story follows the soldier, Marcus Fenix, and his squad as they battle the Locust, the enemy that laid waste to their home.  There are currently 5 games in the series, the first trilogy that follows Marcus Fenix and his squad, Gears of War: Judgment that acts as a prequel, and the upcoming Gears of War 4 that passes the chainsaw gun to a new generation, Fenix the younger and his friends.  As the series has progressed new characters, both male and female, have been introduced.  Taking down the testosterone factor a bit.  Don’t get it twisted, the ladies are just as badass as the men, and just as bonkers.

The games were created by Epic Games, developed by The Coalition, and owned by Microsoft.  When talking to VarietyRod Fergusson, studio head of The Coalition, had this to say:

As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie.  We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.

It’s still too early to know if they will follow the story laid out in the video games or go the Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil routes and create new characters set in the established world.

Gears of War 4 releases for Xbox One and Windows 10 on October 11, 2016.
