GameStop Retro
On the official GameStop X page, the gaming retailer announced that some locations will begin selling retro consoles and games. From discs and cartridges to controllers and consoles, expect to start seeing some of your old favorites in a GameStop near you, maybe. There is no official word on how many locations are on board, but the GameStop website recently added a way to find a participating location near you.
System Overload
So far, expect to see 18 systems represented at these GameStop Retro stores. The entire list includes NES (1985), SNES (1991), Game Boy (1989), Sega Genesis (1989), PlayStation (1995), Sega Saturn (1995), Nintendo 64 (1996), Sega Dreamcast (1999), PS2 (2000), Game Boy Advance (2001), Nintendo GameCube (2001), Original Xbox (2001), Nintendo DS (2004), Xbox 360 (2005), Nintendo Wii (2006), PS3 (2006), Nintendo Wii U (2012) and the PS Vita (2012).

This pretty impressive list spans so many decades that it covers my entire lifetime. Currently, it seems there will be consoles, accessories and games for all the systems listed above — some of which are already available on their site and have even been seen out in the wild. A meme posted on the GameStop X account shows Super Mario 64, Kirby Air Ride, Sonic the Hedgehog, Halo: Combat Evolved and more. While this isn’t an official inventory, it certainly gives you an idea of what to expect.
So Crazy It Just Might Work
GameStop Retro may be a smart move for the game retailer because research shows millennials love spending money on nostalgia. Exhibit A is the room in my house dedicated to “retro” consoles, games and arcades that my husband and I have accumulated.
Collectors and nostalgia-high seekers will check it out to discover that one game they haven’t been able to find. For us, it is Def Jam: Fight for NY; we will own it someday. However, the tumultuous economy makes it harder and harder to spend on anything other than necessities.

GameStop weirdly means a lot to me. It was my first job as a teenager, and I have so many great memories working around video games. I miss the background noise of G4 and the new game trailers looping in the background. I’m probably one of the few people who still shops at GameStop, but I hope this move will bring gamers back together in person.
Unfortunately, I cannot help but worry about what this will do for smaller businesses nearby specializing in retro games. I am lucky enough to have a few places like that where I live, and I would hate to see GameStop put them out of business.
Details are limited at this time, but I wonder where the products come from. Will they also buy retro games and consoles? Stay tuned to GGA for updates on GameStop Retro.
