It has been a long two days awaiting the first of the four animated shorts from Blizzard Entertainment. These shorts focus on four separate stories surrounding the covenants found in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. During Gamescom 2020 Opening Night Live, the first Shadowlands Afterlives animated short for Bastion was revealed and within seconds I was in tears. This isn’t really hard to believe because I cry all the time, but this one is truly beautiful.
The Shadowlands Afterlives Bastion short features the story of our beloved Uther. Following his death at the hands of Arthas he is welcomed into the Kyrian covenant. However, we learn that his need for justice is keeping him from his accession. Devos takes over as his teacher and learns that his soul was broken at the hands of Arthas and Shadowmourne. This helps show how the Maw had a direct connection with the realm of the living even as far back as Warcraft 3. Devos tries to convince her Archon and the people of Bastion that they need to act now to bring an end this horror. They refuse and demand that Devos follow her duty.

Devos returns to Uther and tells him that now is the time for his accession and promises him vengeance once his pupil falls. Cue the cinematic that I have seen over 100 times (if only Invincible would drop for me). But this time we learn that once his eyes are closed, the darkness he sees is Devos and Uther coming to claim his soul. Devos provides Uther the ability to finally get his vengeance. In the final moments of Shadowlands Afterlives Bastion, we see Uther choose justice and drop Arthas’ soul into the Maw. Which I expect him to find once the new expansion launches.
Blizzard Entertainment and the team behind these animated shorts never cease to amaze me. The art style and storytelling work perfectly together to create a mesmerizing tale. The team shared in a blue post today the future release dates, with the next one dropping September 3, 2020.
