Geek Girl Authority has learned (from Entertainment Weekly) that Naomi Watts has been cast as the lead in Jane Goldman‘s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel pilot for HBO. As we reported in June, this series is one of several possible spin-offs Game of Thrones fans may be able to console themselves with when the epic series comes to an end in 2019.

Game of Thrones’s father, George R.R. Martin, has referred to the new series as The Long Night on his blog. Martin says: “I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi. Jane Goldman scripted The Long Night pilot and will be running the show. She and her team are busy in London right now, neck deep in casting, and I expect some more names will be announced soon.”

Variety reports that the “exact details of Watts’ character are being kept under wraps, but it is known she is playing ‘a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.'”

Variety also shares what they know of the series: Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Goldman’s project chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.

We’re super excited about the possibility of spending more time in Westeros– especially with A-List talent like Naomi Watts on screen and the promise of a strong woman like Goldman behind the scenes. Fingers crossed that she takes a note from the later seasons of Game of Thrones and spends more time on dragons and less in brothels.
