Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3 is coming. It’s coming fast, and it brings death with it. We’ve had our reunions. We’ve seen the results of having everyone in the same place and how each of them handles their “last night” in Westeros. Now, some of them will die at the battle of Winterfell. But, not all. I like to look at it from Tyrion’s (Peter Dinklage) perspective: “I think we’ll live.” Yes! Some will! Who? Here are my thoughts.
BONUS: Let’s just get this out of the way. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon (Kit Harington) will live. They have a ‘right to the throne’ issue to sort out, an ‘I’m in love with you but you are maybe treasonous and also my nephew/aunt’ issue to sort out, and it’s all fully on pause until the end of this fight with the dead. They both have to make it through to complete A Song of Ice and Fire. Okay? Given. Good. Now, for the hard work.
JAIME LANNISTER
A friend of mine recently said to me that Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) “can die now, his arc is over.” Oh, I beg to differ, friend! Jaime may very well be the only one that can kill Cersei (Lena Headey). Well, he or Arya (Maisie Williams). Either would be very satisfying.
Jaime’s redeemed himself, but he’s still in love with Cersei. It’s so beautifully complicated! Add to that, the plot for Bronn (Jerome Flynn) to kill both him and his brother. There is too much story wrapped up in how Jaime responds for him to die now. He will make it through the battle of Winterfell. And, we’ll likely have to watch him deal with the death of Brienne (Gwendoline Christie). Yes. I hate it too, but her deepest wish just came true. She’s doomed.
TYRION LANNISTER
Just the fact that he said “I think we’ll live” means he must. Again, there’s the Bronn plot… but there’s more than that. Daenerys needs him when she faces Cersei. If he’s going to die, his death would better serve the fight against the Lannister queen than the fight against the dead. And… just putting this out there… what if Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) gave him a little nugget of something that gave him his optimistic outlook? It’s possible. The crypt is going to be a blood bath, but Tyrion will make it. I’m not so sure about Varys (Conleth Hill). He’s a goner.
SANSA STARK
Sansa (Sophie Turner) is the strongest character in the seven kingdoms. Don’t @ me. She will be the rock Jon needs to face whatever happens with Daenerys when the fight with the living commences. That push-back she gave Dany in their little chit-chat? “What. About. The North.” She’s not going anywhere.
GHOST
You know I can’t get through a GoT conversation without bringing up direwolves. Gods I love them. Ghost dying would make Jon too vulnerable post-Night King. Every Stark child faltered (except Sansa: see above) when their direwolf died. You may think that Rhaegal has now replaced Ghost. Jon is a Targaryen, and Ghost will have to go. It’s a decent argument. Might Ghost sacrifice himself the way that Summer did? Possibly. I know this might be wishful thinking. Well, I believe! As Ghost goes, so goes Jon Snow. Live, Ghost! LIVE!
THE HOUND
It’s so hard to kill the Hound (Rory McCann). And, he’s got a fight coming with the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson). Clegane bowl is still in play, people. Despite all of the fire we’re going to see in this battle, and all of the dead coming to the door, and all of the whatever-that-was he was drinking on the turrets… the Hound will live through this. He’s got other things to take care of.
There you have it! I don’t have high hopes for Gendry (Joe Dempsie), Theon (Alfie Allen), Beric (Richard Dormer), Davos (Liam Cunningham), Edd (Ben Crompton), Brienne, Varys, Sam (John Bradley) or even Arya. I think they’re all fair game to go down. They can’t all die in one battle, right? Right? Bran will likely survive, just because he’s now got the whole realm of men on his shoulders. UGH! This is going to be big!!!
BTW: What’s the over/under on an undead Hodor (Kristian Nairn) showing up at Winterfell? Because, I’m in.
Game of Thrones (S08, E03): The Battle of Winterfell airs Sunday on HBO.
