A series of character portraits was released on Wednesday, for Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season.  They are close up shots and don’t tell us much about the narrative, as we might expect.  But, since we are still without a proper trailer… let’s speculate, shall we?

We see all of the major players in the game in these portraits.  Every remaining Stark, Lannister and Targaryen is featured.  There are few surprises.  Most everyone is in Winterfell, except for Cersei (Lena Heady) sporting new steel shoulder pads and her lion crown.  She looks very sad in both of her photos.  Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is gone.  Is that the only reason?  I mean, that baby isn’t happening, right?

It is fun to see the southerners’ new furry winter costumes.  Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), in particular, is styling’ in her white and red striped fur.  Arya (Maisie Williams) is sporting the Cat’s Paw dagger on her hip.  That valerian steel will come in handy.  Let’s hope we also see her wearing Little Finger’s (Aiden Gillen) face.

The biggest question and speculation for us is where we will find Jaime.  He’s wearing nondescript, beat up armor; a far cry from the glamorous armor of the capital.  The Lannister sigils are completely gone.  His picture is in a decidedly dark locale.  There’s a window behind him.  He’s not in the wilderness.  The most likely thing is that he made his way north to winter fell to join his friend and ally, Brienne (Gwendoline Christie).  He has found his honor in recent seasons… maybe.  Joining forces with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is the ultimate betrayal.  Or, it’s the ultimate double cross.  Will the north trust Jaime?  Who’s side will he land on?

The other points of interest are in the absences.  Obviously there is no photo of Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) or Beric (Richard Dormer).  They may have survived, knowing the trend of season 7 where everyone nearly died.  But, even if they did survive the fall of the wall and the march of the wights… creators are not going to tell us that before the season starts.  Fair.  The other missing piece is the Hound (Rory McCann).  We can assume he made the trip north with his new posse.  Is it possible that it’s him standing behind Arya?  Nah.  He’s bigger than that, right?  Where is the Hound?  And, how will we get to Cleganebowl at long last?  Likely on the battlefield.  Yes, please.  And, who doesn’t want to see the Hound and Brienne fight side by side?

And, where is Gendry (Joe Dempsie)?!?  He was brought back in spectacular fashion to help fight in the wars to come with an awesome hammer… and then sent to Eastwatch never to be seen again.  If he was at Eastwatch when the wall fell, he could be dead.  But, we know he’s not dead, right?  He may have gone past Eastwatch.  He could be anywhere.  And, since we haven’t had an Arya/Gendry reunion, or seen his parentage come to full fruition… he’s got to be somewhere.  Give. Us. Gendry!!
