Wow. Episode four of Game of Thrones season 8 was a rollercoaster, indeed! Whatever you thought of the aftermath of the great war, there’s a lot to unpack going forward. And, I’ve got some thoughts on what lies ahead. Let’s speculate, shall we?
In no particular order, I present to you four predictions for the final episodes of Game of Thrones.
DAENERYS WILL KILL VARYS and TYRION WILL KILL DAENERYS
Okay. Stay with me. I have a theory. I know everyone thinks Varys (Conleth Hill) will kill Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). He’s on a full treason track, for sure. He is for the realm, and only the realm. He will try. And, she’ll follow through on the promise she made him when he joined her team in season 7. She’ll kill him for the betrayal. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) will then finally be convinced that Varys was right, and he’ll do the deed himself. He’ll follow in his brother’s footsteps and become the queenslayer, but he won’t keep her from burning King’s Landing first.
JON SNOW WILL DIE IN KING’S LANDING
He’s not going to make it, you guys. Daenerys is turning full ‘mad king’ and Jon (Kit Harington) is nothing but good and honest and straight-forward. He is the horse we should all back, he didn’t keep his secret, and therefore he will die. Sansa (Sophie Turner) drove it home with her comment on how men in her family fare in the capital. And, Jon has now been separated from his direwolf AND his dragon. Doomed, I tell you. It will be interesting to see how it happens, though. Remember, the Lord of Light brought him back for a reason.
“JAIME” (ARYA) WILL KILL CERSEI
Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is the only one that can really kill Cersei (Lena Headey) and he’s headed her way. But, what about this? What if Bronn (Jerome Flynn) follows through on killing Jaime when he sees that the dragon queen will not succeed after all? And, what if Arya (Maisie Williams) wears Jaime’s face to kill Cersei? Arya and the Hound (Rory McCann) are one their way to King’s Landing. We’ll get Clegane Bowl, and I think Arya will help the Hound kill his monster brother (the Mountain is on her list)… maybe even give the Hound the mercy killing she withheld so long ago. But, Cersei is Arya’s ultimate target. She’s the crown jewel on Arya’s list. The valonqar will be Jaime, but not Jaime… Arya Night-Kingslayer Stark.
SANSA WILL TAKE THE IRON THRONE
In my dreams, Sansa and Tyrion end up together and rule the seven kingdoms. I don’t think that will happen. Tyrion will likely be a casualty of the last war. But, there is great poetic justice in Sansa returning to the capital to rule. She started the series wanting nothing but to be queen someday. She’s going to get her wish, and rule over the ashes left behind by the the dragon queen. That’s the vision Daenerys had in the house of the Undying. Winter (Sansa) comes to the burnt husk of the throne room, and Daenerys never touches the Iron Throne.
Game of Thrones airs on HBO every Sunday… for two more weeks.
