Season 5, Episode 8 of Game of Thrones , ‘Hardhome‘ will go down in history as one of the best GOT episodes ever. EVER!
‘Hardhome’ visited many of the separate stories playing out in Westeros and across The Narrow Sea but did not return to them after that story’s particular scenes were played out. They were all great scenes leading up to the all time baddest of badass battles which I’m sure left millions of viewers with their stomachs in their throats.
–Sansa confronts Theon who in turn gets her to call him Reek. Theon reveals that Bran and Rickon are still alive and Sansa soaks in the realization that she is not the last Stark alive.
–Ayra continues her training at the House of Black and White so she can become No One. Evidently, to become No One, you have to shuck oysters. For ASOIAF readers, it’s interesting how they are going to meld two time periods together.
–Cersei remains imprisoned and without water. Girl had to lick water off the floor for hydration! Qyburn tells her she should confess. Ooooooo boy, I hope she does and I hope that they keep what happens in the book!
–Tyrion and Daenerys get to know each other in one of the best scenes of the season. Impeccably written, performed and produced. Just wow. Daenerys decides not to kill Tyrion and take him on as an advisor so she can get back the throne in Westeros. Tyrion gives her the hard truth and lets her know it won’t be easy but much like the honey badger, Daenerys don’t care. She will break all the Great Houses in Westeros if she has to. Watch that scene here.
-NOW FOR THE BEST 20 MINUTES OF TELEVISION EVER! THE WHITE WALKERS ARE BACK! Jon Snow and Tormund arrive at the wildling settlement, Hardhome. The Lord of Bones gives Tormund a hard time so Tormund beats him to death, you know, like you do. Jon tells unfriendly wildlings not to worry, they’ll never be friends but they need to band together to survive. He even offers them Dragonglass. The wildings also find out about Mance Rayder’s death. Some of the wildlings agree to go, most don’t. There’s a wildling woman and mother named Karsi who is swayed and puts her children on a boat to go back with Jon. (I got very excited when I realized Karsi was the leader of Das Sound Machine in Pitch Perfect 2, read about that here). The Thenns, well, they’re scary scar-faced Thenns and they want nothing to do with it. THEN ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE.
The White Walkers show up escorted by an avalanche of snow. There’s a huge battle with zombie walkers killing Wildlings. People are running for the boats. Jon is fighting hard, so is Karsi and even the Thenn leader. Then Jon come face to face with one of the main White Walker leaders and Oh! Did I mention that Jon’s sword is made of Valerian steel! The White Walker shatters brilliantly when hit with Jon’s sword.
The battle rages on, wildling bodies everywhere. They are definitely losing. Karsi dies when she’s confronted by children walkers. What’s a mother to do? A mom can’t kill children. So Karsi dies at the hands of these kid walkers. The palisades come down and then it is Time. To. Go! Jon gets in a boat and turns around to see the Giant stomping zombie walkers like they are grapes. It’s frakking awesome. Then that giant just gets in the water and starts walking toward the ships.
As they get further from the shore, Jon sees a White Walker staring at him. (This is a new one that we haven’t seen before) He’s standing in the middle of thousands of dead wildlings. He locks eyes with Jon, raises his hand and every single one of the dead bodies stand up. SCARES!
INSANE!
We have two more episodes left until the end of Season 5. Here’s the official synopsis and trailer: Stannis (Stephen Dillane) confronts a troubling decision. Jon (Kit Harington) returns to The Wall. Mace (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) visits the Iron Bank. Arya (Maisie Williams) encounters someone from her past. Dany (Emilia Clarke) reluctantly oversees a traditional celebration of athleticism.
