Episode 9 of Game of Thrones Season 5, ‘Dance of Dragons‘ had big shoes to fill after last week’s ‘Hardhome‘ White Walker Insane-Fest and it didn’t do a bad job. Episode 10 replaced Episode 9’s ice with fire. DRAGON FIRE! There was bad stuff too like child sacrifice. And child rape. So yeah. Typical episode.
Stannis had his camp attacked and food stores destroyed so what’s a King-wannabe to do? Send good man Davos off and sacrifice his child daughter to the Lord of Light. It was an absolutely horrific scene with Shireen screaming and her usually zealot mother Selyse trying to save her at the last minute. I’m not sure about this one GOT writers. You can stop with the shock value now. Really. It’s going beyond ridiculous now. I know they’ve strayed from the books and this is another thing that didn’t happen. But the Stannis in the book would have NEVER done this. If anything, Stannis is clouded by need to do the right thing. Now we just have another evil man in Westeros. Seriously, who are we to root for when Stannis and Ramsey fight?
Jon Snow shows up at The Wall with a bunch of Wildlings and one Giant. He has a quiet stare down with Ser Alliser and the Gate is finally lifted and they are allowed into Castle Black. Little Ollie didn’t look happy. That’s gonna bite John in ass.
Prince Doran shows mercy to Jaime but he’s also doing some good future planning. He’s going to send back Myrcella and Trystane to Kings Landing as long as they get married and Trystane must take his late brother, Oberyn’s place on the small council.
In Braavos, Ayra sees Lord Tyrell and Ser Meryn Trant. THAT’S THE DICK ON HER KILL-LIST! She follows Meryn into a brothel and sees him hire a child to rape and hears him say to the brothel madame, “and I want a fresh one tomorrow.” Yeah, he definitely needs killing. (Once again, child rape – the shock value scenes are doing nothing anymore writers!)
And then Mereen happens! I mean IT HAPPENS!
It’s the games. The killing pits. Daenerys is begrudgingly allowing this to happen. Jorah comes out in a fight to the death and he is not faring well at all. But Jorah rallies and kills the last man and then throws a spear at Daenerys. Oh no he didn’t!!! Really he didn’t. He was throwing a spear at a would be assassin behind Daenerys. THEN, there are Men of the Harpy everywhere in their creepy gold masks and it’s a full on massacre. Super violent, super gross.
It’s not looking good for Khaleesi. Her in-name-only husband is killed. Tyrion saves Missendei from a brutal stabbing. Daenerys, Tyrion, Jorah, Missendei and Daario jump into the arena to escape but find themselves completely surrounded and facing imminent death.
Now this is where I take a deep breath and say to my husband, “IT’S HAPPENING. YOU KNOW IT’S HAPPENING.” He says, “THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY OUT OF THIS!” Then we both look at each other and say at the same time, “DROGON!!!” And wouldn’t you know it, in comes the only unchained dragon and he is in full killing mode (when is he not?). Drogon burns the Harpies, bites them in half etc. Then Daenerys climbs on top of him and flies away.
FINALLY! FLYING DRAGON-BACK!
(although she totes leaves Tyrion, Missendei, Daario and Jorah to fend for themselves. Not a good pal)
Now there’s only one episode left in Season 5. Here’s the synopsis for the Season Finale ‘Mother’s Mercy’ – Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.
