The Game of Thrones‘ final season premiere is fast approaching.  And, with only about 6 weeks to go until the beginning of the end, HBO has released new images on Twitter to tease us all.  Each photo puts one of the surviving players of the game on the Iron Throne.  And, though there’s still no real trailer, the costumes in these photos tell a story.

We see likely and unlikely inhabitants of the throne.  Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is on the top of the list, and others we might expect, like Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the Night King and Cersei (Lena Headey).  But we also see some that we haven’t seen or expected to see sit on the throne.  Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau) is there, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Arya (Maisie Williams)… those aren’t stretches.  But, there’s something very satisfying about seeing The Hound (Rory McCann), Greyworm (Jacob Anderson), Sam (John Bradley) and Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) occupy that space.

There are a few notable costume choices.  Most are in their winter battle gear.  Lots of furs are involved, and we expected that.  Jaime is not wearing Lannister armor, as we saw in the photos released earlier this year.  But, he is still wearing the golden hand.  I was kind of hoping he might leave every piece of Lannister gold behind and sport a hook or something.  Varys (Conleth Hill) is staying neutral in season 8.  He has no sigil of any kind to be seen, and that tracks.  He’s for the realm alone.  The thing that stands out the most is Sansa’s dress.  It is very sparkly, much fancier than she’s ever been… and pretty dragon-like.  Or maybe it’s meant to evoke ice?  Either way… it says something is different about Sansa.  And, her arc has been incredible, so we are ready.

Notably, Grey Worm and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) are wearing the three-headed dragon, but Daenerys is not.  No Stark wears the wolf.  Cersei is not wearing her lion crown.  The message is clear.  Everything is up for grabs.  And we can’t wait for it!!

Game of Thrones season 8 premieres on HBO, April 14th.
