Galentine’s Day is upon us! Created 12 years ago by fictional character Leslie Knope of Parks and Recreation fame, Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating the ladies in your life. It’s no secret that we at Geek Girl Authority adore strong female friendships and their portrayals in media.
So, in honor of the best day of the year, February 13, let’s dive into our favorite best friends. May your Galentine’s Day be all about kicking it breakfast-style and, in the immortal words of Leslie Knope, “like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

Rebecca and Keeley — Ted Lasso
Even though Ted Lasso has only been around since 2020, it already has one of my favorite female friendships. The sweet, heartfelt friendship between Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) truly stands out in a show full of men. Keeley’s generous heart helps Rebecca break out of her shell after her divorce when Keeley brings her a cactus as a thank-you gift; she says it reminds her of Rebecca’s “strong and prickly” nature.
There’s never any competition or jealousy between Rebecca and Keeley, only respect and love. They support each other unconditionally and non-judgmentally, and I wish I could be their friend too. —Alex Faccibene
Jules and Madison — Dollface
Jules Wiley (Kat Dennings) spent five years entangled in a toxic relationship with her ex-boyfriend. When he unexpectedly dumps her, Jules must reconnect with the women she abandoned over the years, including her best friend, Madison Maxwell (Brenda Song). The rekindling and subsequent evolution of their relationship throughout Dollface‘s two seasons serve as the crux of a series about the power of female friendships.
Despite Jules’s five-year absence, Madison forgives her, and the pair not only strengthen their bond but they encourage each other to flourish. Whether it’s Madison pushing Jules outside of her comfort zone or Jules urging Madison to stop being hard on herself, these ride-or-die besties stick together through thick and thin (and they’d 100 percent celebrate Galentine’s Day). —Melody McCune
Lauren and Kym — Purple Hyacinth
Sometimes a girl needs a friend willing to fake being blind to get them out of a blind date gone wrong. And that’s what happens in Ephemerys and Sophism‘s Purple Hyacinth. When Kym stumbles upon Lauren out on a blind date that is going terrible, she walks right into the window for her.
That isn’t the only time they go out of their way to protect each other. “Best friends till the end,” as Kym would say. Both are members of the Ardhalis Police Department; they work cases alongside each other and confide in each other. Seriously, get yourself a friend like Kym, and you will spend the rest of your life laughing. —Julia Roth
The Baby-Sitters Club
I’m gonna go way back to my formative years on this one. The Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin features some of the best female friendships I’ve read to this day. So often, female friendships are portrayed as “frenemyships,” and it doesn’t feel like women want each other’s happiness (insert necessary “burn down the patriarchy” commentary).
However, in the BSC, the girls’ competitiveness in business ultimately benefits the group, as they pay dues into a collaborative fund. Sure, there’s some boy troubles and all that, but I mean, they’re teens, and more importantly, ladies do deal with the Tough Stuff. And also, for a book series that began in 1986, there’s a surprising amount of diversity. —Melis Amber

Kady and Julia — The Magicians
What happens when you think you’ve summoned Persephone, but instead, you’ve inadvertently brought forth Reynard the Fox, a trickster god who proceeds to kill your friends and assault you? Well, when you’re Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve) and Kady Orloff-Diaz (Jade Tailor), two exceedingly powerful magicians, you seek vengeance.
The Magicians‘ “best b**ches” first bond after Kady’s expulsion and Julia’s rejection from the same institute — Brakebills University. After joining Free Trader Beowulf, the pair commit themselves to contacting Persephone. Once Julia regains her memories after her assault, she enlists Kady in killing Reynard. Julia and Kady’s shared trauma deepens their friendship as they throw caution to the wind to find Reynard.
However, Persephone urges Julia to spare Reynard, her son. Naturally, this decision drives a wedge between Julia and Kady. Thankfully, before The Magicians ends, these best friends mend fences. Best B**ches for life! —Melody McCune
Sidney and Tatum — Scream
When I think of best friend duos, my mind immediately goes to Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) from the original Scream. Tatum may seem a little ditzy at times, but she never failed to stand up for Sidney when Gale (Courteney Cox) hounded her. Throughout the movie, Tatum supports and protects Sidney, even from herself. She also reminds Sid that Billy doesn’t deserve her when she recounts how he keeps pressuring her to sleep with him.
No matter what happened, Tatum never stopped caring about Sid. In turn, Sid knew she could count on Tatum, and had the roles been reversed, the support and love would have remained the same. I firmly believe that had she survived, Tatum would have still been beside Sidney, fighting Ghostface throughout the other four films. They are my favorite iconic best friend duo! —Becca Stalnaker
Abbi and Ilana — Broad City
“Four, and three, and two, and one…”
Broad City‘s Abbi Abrams (Abbi Jacobson) and Ilana Wexler (Ilana Glazer) are two best friends trying to survive in The Big Apple. They have their fair share of differences, but these besties stick together like glue. While Abbi strives to become a trainer at the gym where she works (although she studied art), Ilana juggles multiple jobs, living that carefree, weed-filled life.
Ilana practically worships the ground Abbi walks on, and Abbi becomes Ilana’s rock throughout Broad City‘s run. Abbi and Ilana’s friendship is the definition of “platonic soulmates,” sharing every inch of their lives to the point where they question if they’re breaching codependent territory.
But, in the end, Abbi and Ilana learn how to maintain their respective individuality while retaining that BFF status. I imagine they’d go balls-out for Galentine’s Day. —Melody McCune
Eloise and Penelope — Bridgerton
Growing up as a female member of the ton must be hard. All that responsibility to find a husband before another girl takes them. It’s a surprise there aren’t more catfights happening. A girl could use a friend in her corner. Thankfully, Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) have each other, or Bridgerton wouldn’t be the same.
Both seem to want more beyond their lot. When life knocks them down, they lean on each other for support and even turn to each other with hard questions, like where do babies come from? Even though they have opposing opinions at times, they find it in themselves to forgive each other and move on. —Julia Roth
Maya and Anna — PEN15
Ah, adolescence — a time of social awkwardness, growing pains and heightened emotions. Maya Ishii-Peters (Maya Erskine) and Anna Kone (Anna Konkle) of PEN15 are two best friends navigating the uncharted waters of middle school in the early aughts, from asking crushes to the school dance to puberty and, yes, masturbating. The nature of Anna and Maya’s friendship whisks us down Memory Lane as we recall spending time with the BFFs from our formative years.
Whether it’s a two-hour phone call after school, weekly sleepovers or countless shopping trips, these besties bring on the nostalgia and remind us of a time of unadulterated human connection before social media and smartphones. —Melody McCune
