The last couple of years has seen the revival of some major horror icons. Last year it was Stephen King’s adaptation of IT, this year it was the new sequel to Halloween and now there is talk of another resurrection of Jason Voorhees in a Friday the 13th reboot. And who is willing to take the deadly trip to Camp Crystal Lake? Oh, nobody major. Just NBA icon LeBron James according to Variety. One of the greatest basketball players off all time is going to produce a new Friday the 13th movie. The combo might seem a bit random at first glance. But what a lot of people don’t know is that LeBron is a huge horror fan. In an interview with For The Win back in 2017 he goes on about his love for all things scary. Especially when it came to slasher flicks.
“But I’m a huge horror fan. I love horror movies. Obviously Friday the 13th being Jason Voorhees day, I think it’s cool. I remember as a kid on Friday the 13th right when I got home from school, my mother and I we would just watch horror movie after horror movie after horror movie. It’s crazy because now my kids love horror movies too. My two boys love them. When I come home they be wanting to watch horror movies. But no superstitions besides just having a great respect for some of the great slashers of all time, some of the greatest ones of all time. And Freddy (Krueger), Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees and Chucky and a couple more.” –For The Win
On top of that he’s even released Friday the 13th themed sneakers. So, with all this in consideration, it’s possible this revival of the hockey mask killer could be just as successful as Halloween. Maybe. It’s difficult to say at this point. With no confirmed director or writer, the project is still in it’s infancy. And with James set to work on a Space Jam sequel during his off season in 2019 it’s unlikely we’ll see a trailer staring Jason Voorhees anytime soon. But if James is the true horror fan I think he is then I think he’ll do right by franchise and give us something to be very excited for.
