Cloak & Dagger Cancelled at Freeform

The Marvel young adult drama Cloak & Dagger has been cancelled.  Freeform made the announcement on Thursday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The show aired on Freeform for two seasons.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.” – Freeform Announcement

The drama starred Aubrey Joseph as Cloak and Olivia Holt as Dagger. These were two teens affected by the same energy blast that gave them superpowers.  Emma Lahana and Ally Maki also started in the young adult series.  Joe Pokaski served a showrunner and executive producer.

The cancellation comes at a time of change for Marvel TV, as Jeph Loeb is reportedly leaving the company.  THR states Loeb will make a formal announcement before Thanksgiving.  Another change in Marvel is the promotion of Kevin Feige to Chief Creative Officer that is basically adding the duties overseeing all Marvel film and television content.

Since this was Freeform’s decision, and not Marvel’s, I’d say that the Runaways are okay for now. Runaways is the currently only surviving Marvel TV show after the cancellation of Inhumans, The Gifted, the end of Legion earlier this year and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. final season coming next year.  The next phase of Marvel TV begins soon.

RIP Cloak & Dagger. It’s been real.  You can catch Cloak & Dagger one last time in the crossover episode of Runaways. Runaways season three premieres on Friday, December 13, 2019
