The Basics

Let’s get down to the basics. Fairyside is a unique blend of visual novel elements and “bullet hell” segments that provide a diverse gaming experience in a fantasy setting. The gameplay style is a mix of several different games, but they are all well-executed.

Firstly, there are the visual novel elements. While simple, the art is stylized and pleasant while maintaining a typical visual novel feel. Most of the plot comes in through these sections, and the writing for them is straightforward yet often humorous.

The bullet hell levels were by far my favorite part of Fairyside. They play exactly as you expect them to, but the diversity of the enemies in such a short game was refreshing. These levels are procedurally generated, which adds to the replay value of it, a quality not often seen in free games!

Why Should I Play?

Why should you play Fairyside? I enjoyed this game on several levels. The characters were engaging, the bullet-hell levels were fun and the progression system helped with the replayability. The progression system is central to RPGs in general, but the system isn’t too overbearing here. You can progress quite quickly without devoting too much time to it.

The various mobs and bosses have a fair amount of difficulty, but it still feels balanced enough, to be honest. This makes for a fun run as you play through the levels to get the different endings. The characters in the visual novel parts are also compelling enough that replaying them is still interesting.
