Highlights
- Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum fake it to make it in the Greg Berlanti 1960s moon shot rom-com Fly Me to the Moon trailer.
- This is Berlanti’s first big-screen movie since 2018’s Love, Simon.
- The film from Apple TV+ drops exclusively in theatres in July.
Back in December Variety reported Apple had won a competitive package from Sony Pictures starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum and directed by Greg Berlanti. It was called “Project Artemis” at the time (though it was set to be renamed) and the only description was that it was set against the backdrop of the 1960s space race.
Even with those scant details, it was a, “Sure, take our money.” situation. Well, perhaps in honor of Eclipse Day, Sony has dropped a trailer for the movie now entitled Fly Me To The Moon and it’s a rom-com about faking the moon landing. And if you had that sentence on your 2024 bingo card then you are either lying or you work for Sony.

Big Hair, Big Lies and Big Love
As promised, the movie is set in 1960s Cape Canaveral where NASA is preparing to send the first men to the moon. In a firey (literally) meet cute, Channing Tatum’s Cole Davis saves Scarlett Johansson’s Kelly Jones from a small fire she’s started (and made worse with booze) in a diner.
We quickly discover that Cole is working on NASA’s flailing, over-budget and very unpopular moon landing program and Kelly is a marketing specialist hired to shine up its public image. And then it gets a little weirder.
Here’s the official description:
Starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, FLY ME TO THE MOON is a sharp, stylish comedy-drama set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Brought in to fix NASA’s public image, sparks fly in all directions as marketing maven Kelly Jones (Johansson) wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’s (Tatum) already difficult task. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as back-up and the countdown truly begins…

Big Screen Berlanti
Helmed by TV super creator Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow), this is the director’s first big screen effort since queer teen rom-com Love, Simon in 2018. And while that film was well received, Fly Me To The Moon is a decidedly bigger swing. Set to a 1960s rock soundtrack, the trailer for Fly Me To The Moon feels fun, silly and, yes, romantic as Kelly turns Cole’s world upside down.
The cast also includes Woody Harrelson, Ray Romano and what looks like a hilarious turn from Community’s Jim Rash as the decidedly NOT Stanley Kubrick director hired to fake the moon landing.
Summer Fun
The movie will drop exclusively in theatres on July 12. And though it’s a Sony Pictures film, it’s also a co-pro with Apple, so we can assume it will show up on the platform a few weeks after that. In either case, it should be a fun summer distraction for people whose Venn Diagram of Pleasure includes rockets, hairspray, polyester sweaters, conspiracy theories and attractive people falling in love. Like I said, take our money.
