The Flash has had his hands full this season. What started out as a way to save Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) from the speed force quickly turned into a race to stop a mad man from taking over the world. Let’s do a quick recap.

After Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) got married, things took a turn for the worse.  Barry was framed for Clifford DeVoe’s (Neil Sandilands) murder, In actuality, DeVoe found a way to transport his consciousness into a new meta body. Barry spent a few episodes in the big house, leaving Team Flash to deal with the crime in Central City.

Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer), the Elongated Man, adjusted to becoming a part of Team Flash. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) found a way to co-exist with Killer Frost. Cecile’s (Danielle Nicolet) pregnancy gave her mind reading abilities. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) met Gypsy’s (Jessica Camacho) father Breacher (Danny Trejo). Harry (Tom Cavanagh) became increasingly grumpy because he couldn’t outthink the Thinker.

Ralph found that his powers stretched further than he could imagine. He had the ability to shape shift into other people. He used this new found ability to transform into DeVoe, appearing in court, and clearing Barry’s name. Sadly, DeVoe absorbed Ralph and his powers. Barry is having hard time coming to terms with Ralph’s death. Ralph was just getting the hang of being a good hero.

DeVoe kicked it up a notch, racing Team Flash to finding the remaining bus metas. One of those metas had the power to transfer meta powers. Which he did with Barry and Iris. Iris got to live Barry’s life for a few short days before the meta transferred the powers back. But it was really cool seeing Iris be the hero for once!

Cisco discovered that Breacher’s powers were fading because of his age. Breacher retired from the collection agency that he worked for and offered his job to Cisco. He did not accept it, even though it would have given him and Gypsy more time together. Unfortunately, those two broke up.

DeVoe absorbed all the bus meta. During a face-off with Team Flash, he touched Caitlin, taking away the dark matter within her. Killer Frost was gone. Caitlin has been trying to get her back ever since. She then discovered that Killer Frost was a part of her before the particle accelerator explosion. This means that Frostie might exist without the dark matter that DeVoe took.

I can’t recap this season without mentioning Amunet Black. She came back around, first to buy the Flash and some of the bus metas from the prison warden. Then later when Caitlin asked for her help to stop DeVoe. Amunet is a lot of fun. Brilliantly portrayed by Katee Sackhoff, I hope we see Amunet again, very soon!

Harry built a Thinking Cap similar to the one DeVoe made to gain dark matter. He injected the cap with dark matter to increase his thinking abilities. He is in the process of losing his intelligence.  This is what will happen to everyone in the Enlightenment. Harry is very frustrated, so he sought guidance from the Council of Harrisons. They told him to empathize…and it’s working!

Joe and Cecile prepare for their new baby. Iris started writing on her Flash blog again. And the Mystery girl (Jessica Parker Kennedy) showed up a few more times. She is very interested in Barry, Joe, Cecile, Cisco and Ralph. But gave some menacing looks to Harry and Caitlin. She is also hiding from Iris. OH! And Mystery Girl is a speedster! Who is she?

DeVoe’s endgame is the Enlightenment. Years ago, he determined that technology was making people cold and dumb. He wanted to take away technology from humans and make them interested in learning the old fashioned way. Marlize DeVoe (Kim Engelbrecht) saw his vision as revolutionary. So when DeVoe was diagnosed with ALS, they started working on bringing forth the Enlightenment.

They started by increasing DeVoe’s ability to think with dark matter. DeVoe created a thinking cap that would absorb the dark matter into his brain. This happened when the particle accelerator exploded. It worked, but his body couldn’t handle it. Then DeVoe devised the bus meta plan and absorbed all but one. The more dark matter DeVoe absorbed, the more focused he became on his work. He eventually pushed Marlize away. Iris tried to talk her into joining Team Flash to stop DeVoe.

The Flash season finale trailer shows the team desperately trying to stop DeVoe. Flash goes inside DeVoe mind to find a way to stop him, but it appears DeVoe was ready for him. DeVoe tells him there is no escape.

This is concerning. DeVoe is known to absorb the powers of the metas within him. Is he trying to absorb Flash? And we see DeVoe walking by Cecile while she has the power dampener on her head. What does he want with Cecile? Watch the trailer below:

The Team gets help from a surprising ally in their battle against DeVoe.

The Flash season four finale airs Tuesday, May 22 on the CW.
