Mobile Game Monday: FLAPPY DRAGON

Greetings, friends, and welcome to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like gaming on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Flappy Dragon

Flappy Dragon is a casual tapping game from Core Ventura where the player taps to control a variety of dragons through whimsical worlds. Dodge obstacles like towers or ship sails while eating aristocrats along the way. Use various power-ups to get as far as you can through each landscape. Of course, you wouldn’t be a dragon if you didn’t hoard tons of treasure, so make sure to smash through any chests you see.

Controls

Each dragon has one of three control mechanics: Tap, Hold and Release or Follow. First, “Tap” dragons automatically move up or down, and tapping moves the dragon in the opposite direction. You can also hold the tap to coast for a short period. The starting dragon, Flappy, is a tap dragon.

Next, “Hold and Release” means the dragon will automatically fall, and the player must tap and hold to bring the dragon up. I found this to be the trickiest of the modes; for some reason, my brain struggled to grasp the concept. Unfortunately, my favorite mushroom-themed dragon uses the Hold and Release mechanic, so I had to practice.

Left panel shows a pink dragon flying between two columns of an Atlantis themed background. Above the dragon is a humanoid fish holding a trident. Middle panel shows the same pink dragon about to pick up a pink power up. The background has changed to a dark shade with jellyfish. Right panel shows the pink dragon blowing fire.

Lastly are the “Follow” dragons. These will follow your finger up and down. They do not automatically move up or down and will continue where you last left your finger. I found these to be the easiest to control and used them the most.

Tap a button on the bottom right of the screen to activate any power-ups you may have grabbed. Power-ups can do anything from making you indestructible to giving you fire breath.

Dragons, Dragons and More Dragons

My favorite thing about Flappy Dragons, besides the gorgeous levels, is the expansive selection of unique dragons. There are currently 190 dragons to collect, which you obtain by grabbing and hatching eggs. Various eggs can be found in levels or as rewards for completing quests.

To hatch them, place them in a nest and wait or watch some ads to speed things up. A breeding mechanic was later added to the game, allowing you to create even more flying friends.

On the left is an grey Undead Egg with a jack-o-lantern-type face. In the middle shows the egg beginning to crack, with a green grow showing through the cracks that match the eyes. In the last panel, the egg hatched a Cenizvesa, a dark flying beast with tattered wings.

Not only does each dragon have a special look and control mechanic, but they each have their own unique ability. For example, Fondolat drips melted chocolate, or Oad Oat releases a poisonous gas. Finding which dragon is your favorite is the best part of Flappy Dragon. I am not going to lie; I immediately became infatuated with collecting as many dragons as possible.

Twelve different dragon designs are shown in colorful blocks. Some look like other creatures like a butterfly or shark. One dragon is black with eyes all over its body and another is red with a mushroom growing out of its back.

Once you find your favorite flier, use Stellar Donuts to level them up and make them even more powerful. Like eggs, Stellar Donuts are also found throughout the worlds and given as rewards. However, donuts are a little harder to find, so make sure to use them wisely.

Endless Game Customization

Flappy Dragon has the most customization options I have ever seen in any game. You can change things like graphics quality level and frame rate to optimize the game for your device. Additionally, you can randomize worlds and dragons after each game. This truly is a lengthy settings menu, especially for a mobile game. The creators really paid attention to every little detail.

Our Adventure Ends Here

I may be biased because I am obsessed with dragons, but Flappy Dragon is one of the best mobile games I have ever played. The gameplay is simple, but the massive variety of dragons, worlds, and abilities keeps me coming back for more. The level designs are stunning and creative, including themes like Atlantis, space and so much more.

Ads are unobtrusive and optional for things like hatching eggs quicker or getting special eggs. The only thing this game is missing is some sort of multiplayer mode. It would be a lot of fun to outlast your friends through levels or devour each other in some sort of battle mode.

Left shows a spectral looking dragon flying between two tentacles. The bottom tentacle holds a crow's nest with a chest inside. The background is a swirl of various shades of grey. Middle is the same dragon and grey background but this time the dragon flies between traditional Japanese buildings. Right is a tower that has risen to the score of 100.

If you love dragons as much as I do, definitely give Flappy Dragon a try; you won’t regret it. I apologize ahead of time to anyone who also develops an unhealthy infatuation with getting all of the dragons.
