First WANDAVISION Clip Gives Us ‘Bewitched’ Sitcom Hijinks

Still of Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen in Marvel's WandaVision.

Wanda Maximoff is just bewitching and this new clip proves that. WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen paid Jimmy Kimmel a virtual visit on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to debut a new snippet from the upcoming series. Said clip broaches 1960s sitcom territory, Olsen explained.

Now, in the WandaVision sneak peek, we see Wanda (Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) in separate beds during the night. Kimmel noted that the “separate beds” move smacks of The Dick Van Dyke Show, which was a popular ’60s sitcom. Wanda channels Bewitched character Samantha Stephens as she attempts to turn the lights off with her powers. The situation goes pear-shaped, as sitcom scenarios are wont to do.

Additionally, Olsen revealed that WandaVision tackles each American sitcom era starting with the ’50s and ending in the aughts. For their 1950s segments, they filmed in front of a live studio audience for authenticity. Practical effects were utilized as well. The actress went on to say that there’s a reason behind revisiting past decades. Essentially, it’s not just for kicks. As with most Marvel ventures, there’s a reason for the season. Nothing is considered “throwaway” or inconsequential.

Kimmel tried to pry Olsen for WandaVision plot clues but to no avail. The Marvel police are watching, after all. The late-show host presented Olsen with a series of show theories to gauge Olsen’s reactions as to what may be true. My favorite theory was that Dave Coulier is now part of the MCU because of his Full House ties to Olsen’s older sisters Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen. Can you imagine Uncle Joey telling Thanos to “cut it out”? I don’t want to! Side note: we learned that filming for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been delayed due to surging COVID-19 cases and London’s latest lockdown.

Admittedly, the WandaVision clip makes me all the more excited for the show to premiere. I love the “homage to sitcoms” idea and can’t wait to see it executed in the series. We’ve spent 2020 sorely bereft of MCU content. It’s time to kick off the new year with some brand-spankin’ new Marvel shows and films.

You can watch the WandaVision sneak peek around the 4:25-minute mark. Or you can watch Olsen’s appearance in its entirety. WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Kathryn HahnTeyonah ParrisKat Dennings and Randall Park. Allow Wanda to alter your reality when the series is available to stream Friday, January 15, only on Disney Plus.
