If you were watching the Oscars on Sunday, you might have seen a teaser for the teaser that Disney has released for Mary Poppins Returns. But you might not have seen everything you could see. The full teaser was released on Twitter on Sunday evening. And, it looks like the wind is in our favor.
The sequel picks up the story of the Banks’ during the great depression. Jane and Michael Banks have grown up. Michael is a widower with three kids. Having fallen on hard times, Jane helps him out… and so does Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt). The cast includes Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lamplighter Jack and Meryl Streep as Topsy, Mary Poppins’ cousin. That’s not to mention cameos by Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke!
The teaser really teases. It doesn’t give you much. But, it gives you just enough to get really, really excited… if you’re like me. A storm is coming, and we see the wind take a very familiar kite with a suffragette sash. The kite gets pulled through a London that’s a bit drearier than the one we saw in the first film. The kite ends up in the hands of Lin-Manuel Miranda and an adorable little boy, and as it gets away from them and disappears into the clouds… Mary Poppins appears, riding the kite back to them.
The teaser ends with Micheal saying, “Mary Poppins! It is wonderful to see you.” To which Mary Poppins replies, “Yes, it is. Isn’t it?”. And, I’m not going to lie. Emily Blunt is channeling some serious Julie Andrews in the best possible way!
Set in 1930s London, Jane and Michael Banks are now grown-up, with Michael still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. He lives there with his three children, Annabel, John, and George, and the housekeeper named Ellen. After Michael suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins comes back to the Banks family with street lamplighter Jack, and eccentric cousin Topsy.
Mary Poppins Returns will land in theaters this Christmas.
