Books
Some, like Simon, would rather bury their heads in a book above all else. We have them covered with these great reads sure to please any bookworm.
Thank you to Titan Books for sending a copy of What Makes Us Mighty and Coup de Grace in exchange for an honest review.
What Makes Us Mighty by M.K. England is the sixth installment of the Firefly novel series published by Titan Books. Captain Mal Reynolds and the rest of the Serenity crew have picked up a job for some fancy-pants duke. Per usual for this crew, what should have been a simple job becomes much more.
The crew begins to notice a great divide between those with and those without in the settlement of Kerry. Mal and his friends become embroiled in a political revolution, but is everyone on the same side?

M.K. England finds a nice balance between action and intrigue. The action scenes flow smoothly and read easily. England does a fantastic job of portraying subtle exchanges between characters and nuances between relationships. The Serenity crew often communicates with just a look, and I could easily imagine every sideways glance or raised eyebrow.
The novel is so well written that I imagined the entire adventure in my head while I was reading. What Makes Us Mighty is the closest thing we have to a new Firefly episode and tucks nicely into the franchise canon.
Coup de Grace by Una McCormack tells the story of Annie Roberts, who recently lost her father to senseless gang violence — allegedly. Annie is determined to find out the truth about her father’s murder and has enlisted Captain Mal Reynolds to help her find justice.
As the crew digs deeper, they find that Annie’s father has made powerful enemies as a local lawyer. Has the crew of Serenity bitten off more than they can chew, or will they fly out of Yell City by the skin of their teeth?

This novel focuses more on the Western vibe of the series rather than the science fiction aspect, which is a nice change. However, the novel is written from Annie’s point of view, and her colloquial speech is repetitive and choppy to read through. This point of view also takes time away from learning more about our beloved Serenity crew.
Annie’s dialogue dilemmas aside, Coup de Grace is still an exciting adventure worth a read. Anyone who enjoys Firefly, Westerns or mysteries will enjoy this ride. The entire series makes a pretty sight on any bookshelf; even Simon would be obliged to agree.
Apparel
When it is colder than deep space outside, this knit beanie will keep your ears warm—inspired by none other than Jayne, the Hero of Canton. Any fellow Firefly fan will instantly recognize Jayne’s signature hat, so grab yours here on Amazon. Then anyone who asks about your cool hat is a potential new Firefly friend.
“A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.” –Hoban Washburne

Toys
There are quite a few Firefly action figures orbiting out there. Some of them are only found on resell sites like eBay because, unfortunately, the show hasn’t been around for a while. I lucked out and found this Hoban, my favorite Washburne figure, at a local outlet store, but you can get one here on eBay. Wash even comes with his own little dinosaur toys!
Okay, try to contain yourself when I show you this next one. How adorable is this Kaylee bear plush? It’s even wearing her signature green coveralls with the patches and everything. Kaylee would definitely have this cutie sitting on her bed aboard the Serenity. Get one for you, me and your friend here on Amazon.
The same seller on Amazon also offers a super shiny metal keychain that looks just like the Serenity. Speaking from experience, every Firefly fan loves shinies, and this little bauble would make a great stocking stuffer or bonus birthday present.

Board Games
You are bound to get bored when you spend as much time in space as the Serenity crew. They often play board games to pass their time in orbit. If you know someone who also likes to roll the dice, grab one of these Firefly-themed board games.
Remember what I said about shinies? There is an entire board game dedicated to them called Firefly Shiny Dice by Upper Deck. It is a press-your-luck dice game that can be played in under 30 minutes. Play as the crew of Serenity and try to complete mission objectives. Will you press your luck for bigger rewards or lose it all to the Alliance? Check your local board game shop first if you are lucky enough to have one in town. If not, get it here on Amazon.
Gale Force Nine offers a variety of Firefly-themed games, such as Misbehavin’, the faction deck builder. Or try Firefly Adventures, where players work together as Serenity crew members to complete various missions. It even comes with a bunch of awesome minis of your favorite Firefly characters. Check out the whole gorram collection from Gale Force Nine here.
