Netflix has brought us Daredevil twice now, introduced the world outside us comic book nerds to Jessica Jones and is bringing us Luke Cage, but we’ve still got The Iron Fist, Danny Rand, to meet.

And that is very much underway as the casting for that role was announced just over a month ago with Game of Thrones star Finn Jones taking on the role of Danny Rand, an American heir to a billionaire’s fortune and stuck in the foreign, mystical city of K’un L’un. He spends his entire life there studying Kung Fu, other martial arts, Buddhism and various mystical arts, always with the goal, somewhere in the back of his mind, of having his revenge on the man that took his mother and father from him.

In great shape, a master martial artist, a calm center in a storm of fury and anger, an adept practitioner of arcane practices — that’s a very tall order for any actor.

Well, Finn Jones is taking all of this very seriously. In EW’s print edition this week, he talked about how he’s prepping for his performance, which is assumed to start production some time later this year for a 2017 Netflix release.

As he told the magazine, he is studying and practicing “Kung fu and Wushu mixed with a bit of tai chi.” He then follows this with a regimine of lifting weights to, as he says, “bulk me up.”

This is then followed by daily studies in Buddhist philosophy and meditation.

In his first real quote about taking on the role, he admits that it’s that complexity and seeming contradiction that really drew him to the role in the first place.

“I’ve always dreamed of a role that bridged spiritual discipline and badass superhero. There’s a contradiction in those elements that’s going to be very fun to play.”
