Our last story from EW today consists of the adorable Finn and his new partner, Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We learn that Finn is immediately trying to leave the Resistance and go to the Outer Rim, as he originally intended. But with the help of Rose, he stays and continues the good fight.
When we last saw Finn, he was healing in a bacta-like suit due to his lightsaber injuries from Kylo Ren. Rey had to leave him and unable to say goodbye to his face. And when he wakes, he wants out. Immediately. John Boyega informs us.
It got really real for him. And he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,], but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He’s trying to do that at first.
Key is “at first”. That’s when Rose comes in, a Resistance worker that works in the background doing the dirty work that people don’t think of. She’s behind the scenes while her sister is a gunner working with star pilot Poe Dameron. Rose doesn’t really feel like she’s good enough in her position. According to the article, she’s a gearhead, a grease monkey and a jack-of-all-trades. Kelly Marie Tran fills us in.
Poe Dameron is super cool. Finn’s super cool. Even though [Rose] is good at what she does, she’s not known. She’s not cool. [Rose]’s this nobody, this background player, which is what makes her interesting. She’s not the best. She’s not royalty. [Rose]’s someone who is just like everyone else.
And when coming across Finn, she’s awed by him. He was the stormtrooper that switched sides and helped blow up Starkiller Base. He even went against Kylo Ren. To her, he’s a big deal. Finn likes this at first, but then comes to realize that he’s not what he seems.
He appreciates the adoration for a second, but when he meets her, Finn is trying to escape the whole war. He’s trying to leave. And she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn’t necessarily true. …It’s now an opportunity for him to be the best he can be. He has to make a decision, and Rose is there to help him make that choice
I really like this dynamic. While Finn is a big deal and he’s done incredible things, he’s still human. He doesn’t have the Force but he’s handy with a blaster. Rose is also human, so to see the little guy in the bigger picture is something I’m looking forward to. We got a bit of it in Rogue One, but I’m looking forward to more. Not to mention I think Finn is the bravest character we’ve seen in the saga, so I’m sure he’ll live up to Rose’s expectations. Eventually, that is.
While Rose ends up tagging along with Finn on his new missions, it leads them to Canto Bight. A casino covered city where the rich alien life of the galaxy go to play. According to director and writer Rian Johnson, it’s pretty much Vegas in space.
The whole city is kind of one sort of luxury resort that’s been built on this very otherwise abandoned, arid planet. It’s like Vegas with aliens. So maybe it is just like Vegas.
We learn that Finn and Rose will be with a group who try infiltrating the opulent planet. We saw in the behind the scenes in what looks to be a jail cell so the plan will probably end up failing in some capacity. We’ll learn this December though!
What do you think of their comments? Are you looking forward to seeing them work together? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news. The Last Jedi will be in theaters December 15th.
