DC and Warner Bros. came into San Diego Comic Con in a really weird place. They’re at a bit of a fan deficit due to the poor reception of their most recent film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but there is also a lot of excitement and hope for their upcoming film, Suicide Squad, which is tracking to do very well at the box office and has received the same amount of public scrutiny that Dawn of Justice did.
With that in mind, Warner Bros and their DC Division really brought the goods this past weekend, showing us a new trailer for Suicide Squad, Justice League and Wonder Woman!
The Wonder Woman trailer, starring Gal Gadot in the titular role which she is reprising from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is pitch perfect Wonder Woman, with equal parts mystic powers, exotic locales and powerful fighting.
We first see a quiet moment between Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and Diana on the beach of Themyscira, where Steve has just washed up. She’s never seen a man before, which confuses the WWI fighter pilot. There’s also a great moment where Steve asks about her father, which she responds with “Zeus gave me life.” Steve’s response, “That’s neat.”
But from there, it gets increasingly more intense, seeing Diana lose the comfy robes of Themyscira for the more proper dress of a lady in the world and then, eventually, the divine armor of her people as she goes to battle alongside Steve Trevor.
Did we say battle? We meant that she goes in to some of the absolute best fight scenes we’ve seen in a trailer. She’s got her golden Lasso of Truth, but she’s using it to hog-tie men in a blur of motion before tossing them around like rag dolls. She’s got a shield she uses to stop bullets, but to also slide on the ground to kick some soldier’s asses. She’s got a sword that she uses to cut soldiers down and she does it all so fast that the scenes have to be seen in slow motion to get what she’s doing.
Then, in the midst of all of that, it appears that the German army invades the shores of Themyscira and, rightfully so, have their asses handed to them.
This is absolutely the Wonder Woman we’ve been looking for.
