Filmmakers Inspired by Short Story Found on Reddit

Two filmmakers struck “Reddit Gold” without have to pay for it. Fangso Liu and Haines Landry found Adam Spielman’s short story, Limbo, in the /r/WritingPrompts section of the social networking website. In this subreddit, writers are given a prompt to inspire a new story. (I’ve always loved writing prompts. Website io9 uses wonderful sci-fi concept art for their writing prompts that I love to use). In Spielman’s case, the prompt was ” A Man gets to paradise. Unfortunately, Lucifer won the War in Heaven ages ago. What is this mans’ experience like?”

Liu and Landry loved the Spielman’s result so much that they sought his blessing, which they received, to make a film out of his story. They even landed a big name to star as the lead, H. Jon Benjamin. Benjamin voices Sterling Archer on the ultra-popular animated series Archer. He also has voiced characters for other animated shows such as Bob’s Burger, Venture Bros., Dr. Katz, and The Family Guy, just to name a few.

Liu and Landry have also put an impressive crew together to work on the film. Now that all these pieces are in place, it’s time to raise the funds. They’ve created a Kickstarter campaign to raise $30K. They are at $22K now.

They did a wonderful job putting together the campaign on Kickstarter, it’s a solid plan. They explain exactly what they plan to do, who they plan to do it with and the risks and challenges involved. There’s even a fun video about the campaign featuring H. Jon Benjamin. This page is really deserving of a visit. Never have I seen such an airtight fundraiser on Kickstarter. Liu and Landry mean business and it seems unlikely that they would use the funding unwisely. I think it is a GREAT Kickstarter to support because the creative journey has been so intriguing thus far.

I’m inspired!

Here’s a bit about the story itself:

Jim has an embarrassing death and awakens in the afterlife.

There, he’s granted what he wanted most on Earth: great sex, delicious food, bottomless alcohol, and other hedonistic desires. Naturally, Jim is wary of his new life. Once everything he ever wanted comes so easily, he starts to rethink his existence.

Jim begins to question everything and must make a very difficult decision.
