Amazon’s hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel opened popular culture to the world of stand-up comedy of the 1950s. While many of the legendary stand-up comics who rose to prominence during this era were men, in the decades before Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, Jean Carroll helped blaze a trail for the women who came after her.
This week at Female Gaze Productions, we’re taking a brief look at Jean Carroll’s career, which lasted from the days of vaudeville and deep into the 1960s. Her’s is a story which is at the heart (with some creative license) of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
