Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, even if you haven’t watched their movies, you’ve at least heard their name at some point. The pair helped revolutionize the movie musical during the Great Depression, turning the genre into the giant it would become. On this week’s Are You a Bad Girl, I discuss their 1935 film Top Hat, and how it plays through not only a historical, but a gendered lens. We also look at the star persona’s of Ginger Rogers and actor Erik Rhodes, and how they contribute to the construction of the narrative.
