Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring and Total War: Warhammer III

February 2022 continues to be stacked with fantastic video games. We cover more than a few major contenders for “Game of the Year” in the second half of our February game releases coverage! If you don’t see a game down below, chances are it made it onto part one! Be sure to check it out! Drumroll, please:

The King of Fighters XV

The King of Fighters has been alive and kicking (literally) since 1994. After the positive response from The King of Fighters XIV, SNK finally returns to the classic fighting game franchise with The King of Fighters XV. The “Rush” single button from the previous title returns, updated to help franchise newcomers score combos and special moves easier. If you’re a longtime fighting game fan, imagine the fully charged Focus Attack from Street Fighter, but you can make it with a single button press! And for you fans of Elisabeth Blanctorche, who was absent from KOF XIV, she finally returns to join forces with a fully recovered Ash Crimson! KOF XV promises a fast and faithful fight if you love fighting games.

The King of Fighters XV releases on February 17, 2022, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Total War: Warhammer III

Maybe you are a fan of miniature games like Warhammer 40K? Perhaps you are a fan of strategy games like the Total War series? Or maybe you are all of the above, in which case, thank you for reading, Henry Cavill! But in case you’re not Geralt of Rivia himself, you should still get excited for Total War: Warhammer III! Players will fight in the Realm of Chaos, the source of all magic, with the turn-based and real-time strategy that Creative Assembly is known for. Similar to the Vortex rituals from Total War: Warhammer II, interdimensional rifts will periodically erupt across the campaign map. So the middle of your empire might not be as secure as you think. Promising a massive experience for fans who have journeyed with Total War for all three Warhammer games, this strategy game is something exceptional.

Total War: Warhammer III releases on February 17, 2022, for PC and Mac.

Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Zero Dawn gave Guerrilla Games an amazing foundation, and now they have built themselves a house with Horizon Forbidden West! The iconic PlayStation action role-playing game takes Aloy into the “Forbidden West”: post-apocalyptic Utah, Nevada, and California. As a mysterious and invasive “Red Blight” begins choking off native flora, Regalla and her rebels use overridden Machines to forcibly unify the Tenakth clans under her iron fist. Horizon Forbidden West promises a glorious and refined sequel with plenty of secrets left to discover with an even more expansive map than its predecessor and more complex combat.

Horizon Forbidden West releases on February 18, 2022, for PS4 and PS5.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be the longest Destiny 2 season ever, with a whole year of story missions to look forward to. Yes, that means a bunch of older Destiny 2 content will disappear but don’t worry, new loot shooter players. You still have three weeks to play Forsaken, spend all your gunsmith materials, and clear out your vault. The titular witch queen is Savathûn: a god of the undead aliens known as the Hive. Yeah, you read that right: your mission is to kill a god. You may be familiar with Savathûn’s brother, Oryx? (who Destiny 2 players had the satisfaction of slaying in The Taken King expansion)

Well, we killed one god. How hard can another be? Very, if the creepy forests, eerie swamps, and Gothic cathedrals on Savathûn’s Throne World are any indication. The Witch Queen includes a new weapon crafting system and a makeover for Destiny 2‘s subclasses. Also, The Witch Queen also features a new legendary difficulty, allowing players to explore a more challenging campaign mode in exchange for better rewards. Whether you are in it for the guns, gameplay, or story, The Witch Queen promises a lot of great narrative and content for the year to come.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen releases on February 22, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Monark

Monark takes place at a high school named Shin Mikado Academy. In this tactical JRPG, students are driven mad by a mysterious Mist that seals the school off from the outside world. Gaining the power to enter the “Otherworld,” the player must defeat the demons that empower the Mist to free their fellow students before it is too late! If this sounds familiar to Shin Megami Tensei V fans, you’re right. Many staff from the Shin Megami Tensei series were involved in developing Monark. However, Monark boasts far more tactical combat. If you like the idea of the student council battling supernatural threats, then maybe give Monark a try?

Monark releases on February 22, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Sol Cresta

After a last-minute delay in 2021, Sol Cresta is finally rocketing onto the Nintendo Switch this month! The spaceship shoot-’em-up allows players to add allied ships to their formation (similar to after freeing a captured ship in Galaga). Not only does this power up your attacks, but players can also reconfigure their formations to swap out new powers. If that sounds like your kind of game, then form up and ready to face the enemy!

Sol Cresta releases on February 22, 2022, for PC, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.

Assetto Corsa Competizione

If there’s one thing Italian game developer Kunos Simulazioni knows, it’s cars. Assetto Corsa Competizione originally released to PC on May 29, 2019. This month, their Grand Tourer racing simulator finally comes to next-gen consoles. In addition to having all your favorite automobiles from the 2018 and 2019 racing seasons, Competizione is also proving to be a popular eSports platform for racing games. Is the BMW M4 GT3 still the car to beat? Give it a try for yourself and take the wheel!

Assetto Corsa Competizione releases on February 24, 2022, for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream

One of the most anticipated JRPGs of 2022, Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream, is a glow-up compared to its predecessor. The Atelier Ryza games are known for soft yet vibrant characters, but Atelier Sophie 2 adds a particularly bright and colorful world. In addition to warm summer vibes, the open-world includes varying levels of elevation.

Scattered across these maps are “gathering nodes” where players can use specialized tools in a mini-game to get exactly the material they want. The new alchemy system evolves the previous synthesis system to provide new bonuses and options for crafting those materials. Combat remains turn-based, but it is quick and strategic. Exceeding the expectations of many longtime fans, Atelier Sophie 2 is shaping up to be the best game in the series.

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream releases on February 25, 2022, for PC, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.

Elden Ring

The Elden Ring hype shows no signs of abating. Some users fear it might be plagued by the same security issues as the Dark Souls series. However, closed beta users still unanimously crown this action role-playing game as the best of 2022 (if not the best of all time)! The game’s world features the freedom to go in any direction. Different zones on the map have entirely unique aesthetics and physical layouts. With strategic nonlinear gameplay and a story with lots of complex characters, Elden Ring seems much like Dark Souls. Overwhelming and challenging at first, but you may not want to play any other game again.

Elden Ring releases on February 25, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Grid Legends

Grid Legends is the fifth entry into the Grid franchise by Codemasters. In addition to racecars, the racing game includes over 100 vehicles, including semi-trailer trucks! If over 130 unique tracks to race on isn’t enough to grab your attention, players will be able to create their own races! That’s right: your own custom tracks, complete with obstacles, rules, and vehicle restrictions. Grid Legends also includes a narrative-focused story mode, inspired by the Netflix documentary Formula 1: Drive to Survive. With a smoothed-out third-person camera and respectably challenging AI opponents, maybe Grid Legends is enough to get you behind the wheel?

Grid Legends releases on February 25, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
