AMC made two announcements for Fear the Walking Dead fans. First, we have a premiere date for season eight. Second, season eight will be the final season for Fear TWD. This comes as a surprise, since Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) just returned last season. Dickens, Rubén Blades and Colman Domingo are the only original cast members remaining. Another OG, Alycia Debnam-Carey exited the show last season. OG TWD cast member Lennie James joined the series in season six.

The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios at AMC Networks announced the final season will consist of 12 episodes in two six episode blocks. “It’s a truly exciting year for The Walking Dead Universe, as we conclude an epic journey on ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ which became one of the most successful shows in the history of cable television,” said McDermott. McDermott went on to talk about the new upcoming spin-offs premiering in the next two years.

Morgan (James) met Madison (Dickens) at the end of season seven.  He enlisted her help to get his daughter Mo back. And at the end of the season seven finale, they were on their way to a boat. Luckily Morgan told Madison about his friends who just happened to be stranded on the water in life boats. AMC also released the first look at the final season. The scene appears to be a look at where Madison ended up in her four season absence. It’s not easy to watch, but may give some context as to why she’s afraid of the people she works for. You can watch that clip below.

Fear the Walking Dead also stars Danay Garcia, Karen David, Jenna Elfman, Austin Amelio, Christina Evangelista and Alexa Nisenson. The series is executive produced by Scott M. Gimple, showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, Michael Satrazemis and David Alpert. AMC Studios produces.

Fear the Walking Dead returns for the final season on Sunday, May 14 on AMC.
