Fear the Walking Dead has begun production on season five with two returning characters to the dead world. Comicbook.com is reporting that Ruben Blades will finally return as Daniel Salazar. And the dead are truly rising with the return of Troy Otto, portrayed by Daniel Sharman.

Daniel Salazar hasn’t been seen since the end of season three. He was on the Tijuana Dam when it exploded, but we never got to see if he lived or died in season four. So this is great news for the Daniel fans. Co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss teased Blades return this past summer. “All I’ll say is they’re out there in The Walking Dead world, so who knows, we could see them in the future at some point,” Chambliss said. There is also talk of Blade appearing in a Walking Dead movie.

A more surprising return is that of Troy Otto. Troy was thought to have died in season three after being hit in the head with a hammer. It’s possible that he survived that blow to the head. It’s also possible that Althea (Maggie Grace) encountered Troy at some point in documentary travels. As you can tell, we don’t know the circumstances behind Troy’s return, but in the dead world, anything is possible.
However the show did time jump ahead a couple of years. If Troy truly is back, he’s had time to recover from his head injury. Maybe Daniel saved him? It would be very characteristic of Troy to want to find Madison (Kim Dickens) and Nick (Frank Dillane) to exact his revenge. But we know those two have perished in the current timeline. As for the remaining Clark, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), she never was a fan of Troy. It’s possible those two could go head to head in season five.
I’m actually excited about this news. Daniel Salazar is a rogue character. He always seems to know what needs to be done and isn’t afraid to take risks. And Troy…well, I wasn’t sad when he died, but I did like the dynamic that Troy brought to the story. He would have been a interesting character to develop. And now he’s back! They should really bring back Walker (Michael Greyeyes) though.
The premiere date has not be set, but previous seasons have premiered shortly after The Walking Dead season finale. So expect Fear the Walking Dead to return in Summer 2019.
