Season two of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD ended with everyone headed back to the United States.

Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) left the hotel to head for the border. Nick (Frank Dillane) and Luciana (Danay Garcia) made it across the border and were taken into custody. Strand (Colman Domingo) stayed at the hotel and Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) was being shot at.
Season three begins at the border. Madison, Travis and Alicia are being led by a group of men. As they walk, Madison is looking at the dead to make sure Nick isn’t one of them.
They go to an abandoned army base and are split up. The men take Madison and Alicia to an office on the base.
Travis is taken to what appears to be a supply room. They put him a room full of people, mostly men. Travis looks around and see Nick. He waits for the guards to leave to move to Nick. Luciana is with Nick.
Travis and Nick catch up on news about Madison, Alicia and Chris. Nick asks if they were looking for him. Travis says they had to.
Madison and Alicia are looking for a way out to find Travis. Alicia says they need to stop chasing Nick. They alway find trouble.
A man named Troy (Daniel Sharman) enters the room and apologizes for the rough treatment. He says they need to processed to find out who they are, where they’re coming from and if anyone else is joining them. Madison asks to be let go. She needs to find her son. Troy says after they are processed they will be given supplies and let go.
Troy goes to check on his men in the showers. His guys are killing people to see how long it takes for them to turn. Troy goes into the holding room and asks for Travis. He assumes Travis is Mexican. Travis corrects him and says he’s Maori. Troy asks if Travis had contact with New Zealand. It’s an isolated island, so he thinks maybe they avoided the outbreak.
Nick asks for Madison and Alicia. He tells Troy not to hurt them.
Travis asks Troy to help Luciana. He says she’s dying. Troy says everyone dies. And leaves.
Madison is frantically looking for something. Alicia gives her a knife. Madison promise to get them out, even if she has to kill someone. She says if it comes to killing, it has to be her…not Alicia.
A man named Steven (Ross McCall) tells Travis that his women are in danger. He says he can get them out, but he needs someone strong enough to help him. The guards come back and take Nick, Luciana, Travis and Steven to the next room. They tie up the first victim and shoot him.
The guards missed the first guy turning. One of the guards mention that they only have 24 hours so they test two at the same time to see who turns first.
Troy watches Madison and Alicia sleep. He writes observations about them in a notebook. Madison asks if Travis is dead. Troy asks if she would be hurt if Travis was dead. He asks if Madison loves Travis’ life more than her own. She says yes.
Travis distracts the guards by asking about the dead bodies at the gates. One of the guards tells him it’s a force field. He explains that the dead still have senses. They won’t eat anything that is dead. The walkers won’t go near anyone that smells dead. Travis asks how many people died for that information.
Travis questions their motives. He tells them they’re crazy. They justify what they are doing for science. They asked him if he has ever killed anyone. He says only those that deserved it.
This triggers something in the guards and they decided to kill Nick. Travis tells them to take him. He says his kind don’t turn. They don’t believe him. He says he will prove it when they kill him. They take him to chain him to the wall and he he fights back. One of the dead men wakes and attacks the soldiers. Nick, Steven and Luciana fight back and they escape.
Troy tells Madison that he doesn’t want to let them go. He wants them to go with him. Troy says he will release Travis if Madison agrees to go with them. They hear a gunshot and Troy leaves.
Steven takes Nick and Luciana to his escape route through the sewage tunnels. A sniper kills Steven and push him down the sewer. The guards take Travis.
Troy catches up to his men taking Travis back to the showers. Troy says he messed up a tender moment with Madison. He says he’s taking Madison home with him and will keep them save. Troy tells his guys to take Travis to the back of the base.
Luciana is having a hard time walking. She tells Nick to go on without her.
Troy returns to the office. Madison and Alicia attack him. Madison stabs his cheek with a spoon. She threatens to dig out his eye. Alicia leaves to find a vehicle.
Nick and Luciana make it to the edge of the tunnel. Nick sees a bunch of walkers headed towards them. They race back into the sewage tunnel.
Troy’s men throw Travis into a pit of walkers. Travis has to fight to stay alive. The guards enjoy the show that Travis gives them. Travis fights off the few walkers that were in the pit he’s in. The guard opens a gate and more walkers appear.
Madison leads Troy outside. He tells his guys to back off. Troy tells her that Travis is dead. Madison demands him to give her Travis and Nick. Troy’s brother Jake (Sam Underwood) shows up. He tries to talk Madison down. Jake says he will find her family. She has to let Troy go.
Madison lets go and Troy lunges at her. Troy says he was saving her.
Jake stops him. He asks Troy for her family. Troy says her man is in the pit.
Alicia finds several vehicles and looks for keys. She hears something coming from the tunnel. She looks in and sees Nick. He is pinned by Steven. She tosses him a knife and Luciana saves Nick. The guards take Alicia.
Jake takes Madison to the pit. Travis is alive. He killed all of the walkers. Jake orders the men to get him out of the pit. Travis tells Madison that Nick is there.
Alicia, Nick and Luciana are brought to the pit and the family is reunited.
Jake gives Madison and Travis supplies and a vehicle. He tries to talk them into going to his father’s ranch. Jake apologizes for Troy’s behavior. He says Troy won’t be able to misbehave at the ranch.
Jake is angry with Troy. He was supposed to go in, get the fuel, and get out. Troy says he was doing research on the sick and the dying. Jake asked what he learned. Troy says he will tell their dad. Jake says their father sent him to the base to protect the people at the ranch.
Troy’s guys pack up their research. One of the guards hears something in the vent. He opens it up and a bunch of rats fall out. An arm grabs the guard and bites his face. Walkers reach out to pull the guard in. The guard is beheaded as he is being pulled through the wall.
Jake tries again to convince Madison to go with them. Madison makes it clear that she will kill Troy if they go with him.
They hear gunshots. Walkers are in the base. Nick and Madison fight off the walkers. Alicia and Travis carry Luciana to a helicopter. Madison and Nick have to jump in a truck with Troy. Everyone escapes the base and are headed to the ranch.
Thoughts…
After two seasons of character development, Fear has come back with a strong opener for season three. In past seasons, there was a lot of personal adjustment for the characters.
- Madison is a strong lead, but her family makes her weak.
- Travis is stronger despite Chris’ death
- Alicia hasn’t changed much. She has the potential to be a strong character, but is too often protected by Madison and Travis. Hopefully this season she will get her chance to shine.
- I think we are finally going to get a clear headed Nick. I’m surprised Madison is able to find him. Nick was probably the most prepared to deal with the chaos of the outbreak. He learned to survive on his own a long time ago.
I get why the soldiers were testing the sick and the dying for reaction time. It is good to know these things. However, they went too far when they started killing people. What kind of shenanigans will Troy get into next?
We didn’t get to see Strand or Ofelia. Will Strand ever leave the hotel? Is Ofelia at the ranch? And the ranch…it sounds too good to be true. Any fan of the dead-verse knows there is no safe place in the zombie apocalypse. Anyone could die at any time…
