After finding out that Victor (Colman Domingo) killed her friend Will, Alicia declared war on him, vowing to take the tower from him. The tower is the safest place to live but Victor is highly selective about who he lets in. They don’t get to live there for free. He let in Grace (Karen David), Baby Mo (Avaya White), June (Jenna Elfman), John Dorie Sr (Keith Carradine), and Wendell (Daryl Mitchell). They mostly serve as leverage over Morgan (Lennie James). Sarah (Mo Collins), Luciana (Danay Garcia), Dwight (Austin Amelio), Sherry (Christina Evangelista), Charlie (Alexa Nisenson), Wes (Colby Hollman), Daniel (Rubén Blades) and others live on the submarine with Morgan.
Alicia is also dying. She was bitten in the bunker. The people she was with cut off her hand, but it was too late. The infection is slowly spreading throughout her body. It’s only a matter of time. Alicia is determined to find everyone a safe place to live before she dies.
Some time has passed. Alicia left the submarine to find more people for their cause. She reached out to Arlo (Spencer Granese), one of Teddy’s followers. Along the way she passed out somewhere. While she sleeps she dreams of following the dead senator. Teddy’s people are with her. The senator tells her to follow him, but attacks her at the same time.
When Alicia wakes up, she is in a strange house and hears loud music. She goes in search of music and finds a walker about to attack a man. To save his life, she destroys the record player, stopping the music. The man turns around just in time to stop the walker from biting him. Alicia faints from overexerting herself, but she gets a look at them and doesn’t recognize him.
When she wakes again, the man introduces himself as Paul (Warren Snipe). Paul is mostly deaf, so he played the music at a level that he could hear it. He found Alicia passed out in a barn and brought her to his house. Alicia doesn’t remember being in a barn. The last thing she remembers is seeing a little girl in a gas mask. Paul also tells her that she’s running a constant fever. She decides to leave, but Paul says she owes him a stereo.
Alicia hears riders approaching and asks Paul to hide her. Arno and his followers are after Alicia. Paul doesn’t ask why and hides Alicia. He then meets Arno at the door. Arno forces his way into Paul’s home to search for Alicia. Paul lies and says he hasn’t seen or heard her. Arno doesn’t believe him but he leaves anyway. He gives him a walkie, asking Paul to call him if he sees Alicia.
Paul asks why Arno is after her. She says Paul blames her for how bad things got for their people. The only reason they left the bunker is because the nuclear blast compromised the structure. Paul cooks for Alicia and they talk to get to know each other better.
After dinner, Alicia says she has to leave. She doesn’t want Paul to get hurt. Paul says she can’t leave until she replaces his stereo, or he’s as good as dead. He knows where to find a new stereo. He promises to help her get back to her people after.
They go to a concert hall that has a stereo that Paul can use. Paul asks again why Arno is after her. She said she tried to lead those people to a safe place, but people died along the way. She says a new place for them to go. Alicia tried to convince Arno to help her get to this new place but he declined. He doesn’t think she should be leading anyone.
Paul says she didn’t make those people follow her. They had a choice. Alicia eventually invites Paul to come live with them. Arno shows up before he can answer. Alicia faces Arno alone. He wants her to the consequences of her mistakes. Arno thinks the dead should be the ones to punish her. He leads her to the trailer of the dead and says it’s only fair that she joins them. As Arno opens the gate to the trailer, Paul shoots his hand, saving Alicia. Alicia and Paul fight off the walkers and Arno’s men. They eventually run to a van and get inside. Paul also drops his new stereo while fighting.
In the van, Paul says he needs the stereo to drown out his late wife’s voice. The last thing he heard was her scream when she died. Alicia understands. She tells him about her dream. She continues to hear the voice tell her “follow me.” Alicia thinks she really led those people to their death. That voice is a reminder of those mistakes.
Paul agrees to go with her to her new home. He thinks there’s a reason they met. They both have something they want to drown out and maybe they can help each other. Alicia doesn’t want him to put his faith in her. She says Arno will go after him. Paul wants to be ready for Arno and comes up with a plan. He calls Arno on the walkie and says he’s ready to help him solve his problem. He invites Arno to his house after dark.
Alicia says Paul doesn’t have to help her. He says she needs to stop punishing herself for something that’s not her fault. He also suggests that the voice she hears shouldn’t be silenced. Paul tells her to start listening to the voices. Things may not have worked out before because Alicia thought she was hearing someone else tell her what to do. What if the voice is actually hers. If she doesn’t listen, she will regret it.
Arno shows up and he knows Alicia is there. Alicia puts in some earplugs while Paul starts his music. The music is so loud that it attracts walkers. Arno and his men are trapped on the porch. When Arno tries to get in the house, Paul shoots at him. The walkers attack Arno’s men.
Walkers get into the house and eventually, Arno’s men do too. A speaker blows and the music stops. Paul stands face to face with Arno. They don’t see the walker behind Arno. When the walker grabs Arno, he reacts by shooting Paul. Alicia grabs Paul and takes him to another room.
Paul tells Alicia to leave him, but she doesn’t want to. He says she needs to go to save her people. Arno is still alive and shooting walkers. Paul tells Alicia to believe in herself. She’s afraid she won’t make it past Arno, but Paul says she will if they can’t hear her.
Paul starts playing the bagpipes while Alicia sneaks out. He watches her run away outside. Arno eventually bust down the door and shoots Paul in the head.
Alicia runs to a crossroads where she sees the little girl. She asks the girl if she’s okay. The girl says she will be. Alicia falls to the ground. The little girl says she can help Alicia if Alicia can help her. Alicia falls asleep.
Alicia has the same dream again, but this time, she’s chasing herself. She says to herself, “Padre, follow me.” When Alicia turns around her followers are Morgan and the others. The little girl walks from behind Wes. Alicia can hear Morgan calling her name, telling her to wake up.
Alicia wakes up in the sub. Morgan is there and says they found her collapsed outside of the sub. She asks about the little girl, but Morgan says there was no girl with her. She says she couldn’t convince Arno to join her but she has an idea of how to get more people.
Alicia gets up and walks to the kitchen. Morgan follows her, asking what her plan is. Alicia tells Morgan about her dream and how that dream changed. She says her mom, Nick and Morgan have their dreams. She always had such strong voices around her that she never stopped to listen to her own. And now that’s what she’s doing.
Alicia says there is a radio in the bunker. She remembers hearing people talk about finding Padre. She wants to get on that radio and tell them that Padre doesn’t exist, but the tower does. If she can convince them to come to the submarine, then they will have more people on their side.
Morgan says he wants to go with her. Alicia asks him to stay. When she returns, that’s when they make their move on the tower. Morgan says they will be ready, but she needs to rest before she leaves. Alicia says she can’t. She leaves, telling Morgan to be ready.
Arno and one of his guys escaped Paul’s house. The other guy was bitten. They are stopped by a scary sight. There is a crater in the ground, full of walkers. Arno thinks if one gets out, then no one is safe. He decides they will take the tower for themselves before that happens.
