FX is taking us back up into the north woods for installment 3 of the Fargo series. The official trailer came out today.
We get a good look at Ewan McGregor as BOTH of his characters and the wedge that exists between them. Money, of course… and the love of a woman. Aren’t those the only reasons anything ever goes awry in this world? Carrie Coon stars as the law enforcement protagonist, Gloria Burgle who seems less entangled, but who can tell for sure?
It looks as if we can expect all of the things about Fargo that we’ve come to love; love, loss, betrayal, absurdity, murder, mayhem and midwestern accents. There also seems to be a ‘stamps’ motif emerging. One of the promos released recently was just a short scene with Ewan McGregor licking a stamp, and the graphic above brings it back. Should we be reading into the images contained within the stamps? Some of them seems to allude to previous seasons, like the flying saucer, but perhaps we’ll see them in season 3.
The real question is if show creator Noah Hawley and cast members Coon, McGregor and their counterparts can match or exceed the excellence of season 2. And, I mean it was EXCELLENT. Season 2 of Fargo was some of the best TV I’ve ever seen… and I’ve seen a whole lot of TV. Keeping up with the writing and performances from last season is a high bar to set. If they can clear that bar, we’re all in for a giant treat.
Here’s what FX has to say… You had me at ‘cutthroat competitive bridge.’
From Creator Noah Hawley, the new installment of Fargo is an all-new “true crime” tale starring Ewan McGregor in dual roles as Emmit Stussy and his slightly younger brother Ray. Their sibling rivalry leads to a twisted path that begins with petty theft but soon leads to murder, mobsters and cutthroat competitive bridge. Fargo will premiere April 2017 on FX.
