Continuing a week of massive video game reveals, on Friday, May 31 we got an in-depth look at Far Cry 6’s gameplay. Ever since the game’s first announcement back in 2020 and the reveal of acclaimed actor Giancarlo Esposito as the lead villain, old and new fans alike have been anxiously awaiting more news about this title. Here is all the information that we learned during Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 Gameplay Showcase.
Welcome to Yara
The showcase kicked off with a narrative trailer for the game, highlighting the current state of Yara. Yara was once considered the jewel of the Caribbean. The island features jungles, beaches, towns, mountainscapes and the capital city, Esperanza. After a violent revolution cut off the country from the rest of the world, the island has slowly deteriorated over 50 years. Today, Antón Castillo seeks to restore the island to its former glory. But blood is the price of his control, and now the island is on the brink of revolution.
In this trailer, we also meet the protagonist we play as: Dani Rojas. Dani operates similarly to how Eivor does in Assassins Creed Valhalla. Players will have the choice of playing either as a male or female Dani. From there, Dani’s appearance can be further customized with a variety of outfits and gear. But throughout the trailer and gameplay, we see female Dani take center stage.
One of the most exciting moments from this narrative trailer is the “For Family” moment. Is Dani somehow related to Antón and Diego? Does Dani consider the island of Yara their family? Or are they simply related to a character we have yet to meet? I guess we’ll have to wait until October to find out!
Weapons and Warfare
Of course, being a Far Cry game, players will have access to a variety of weapons. Since you’re an army of one versus one thousand, you’ll have to get creative. A few unique weapons showcased include a gun that fires sardine cans, a motorcycle engine-powered artillery gun and yes, even a gun that fires CDs while playing the “Macarena.”
Additionally, players will also have the chance to equip Los Supremos — unique backpacks that offer powerful abilities. Oh, and did we mention the companion system from Far Cry 5 makes a return? That’s right, and in Far Cry 6, you’ll have the chance to add Chorizo, a tough two-legged Dachshund, to your team.
Yara is Ubisoft’s “most ambitious open-world yet,” according to Narrative Director Navid Khavari, so navigating the island successfully will be crucial. Just like the weapons, players will have the opportunity to modify numerous vehicles. From the narrative and gameplay trailers alone, we also see Dani piloting tanks, horses, jet skis and even a helicopter. So we can expect a lot of unique vehicle options in Far Cry 6.
Customization and personalization of gameplay are essential in this title. Players will have the chance to control their weapons, vehicle loadout and how they approach missions as well. Stealth your way into situations by taking secret paths carved into the mountains while bribing and sabotaging your way through the city. Or, if you’re feeling fearless, you can walk through a checkpoint and approach your missions head-on. The choice is yours on the island of Yara.
Far Cry 6 will release on October 7, 2021, for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna. What are your thoughts on this gameplay reveal? Let us know in the comments below or on social media!
