Fantastic Beasts eyeing Mads Mikkelsen for role in third film

Lots of news out of the Fantastic Beasts 3 camp this week. The latest is that Mads Mikkelsen is at the top of the list to replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, according to Deadline.

Mikkelsen is famous for being the bad guy. His best role to date, in my opinion, was on the television show Hannibal as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. His bad guy credits also include Casino Royale and Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Mikkelsen can be a good guy too, as he proved in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and King Arthur

Depp was ousted last week when Warner Bros. asked him to step down. This comes after Depp lost a libel suit with a British tabloid over allegations that Depp is a “wife beater.” The accusation caused an uproar with Harry Potter fans when Depp was cast in the role for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Depp’s role in that film was brief, but he was featured more in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Depp is still being paid for the third film.

On Monday we got a release date for the third installment of the franchise, directed by David Yates, but no official title. They would very much like to keep that new date with a new Grindelwald in place. But what about Colin Farrell, you ask? Farrell played Lord Percival Graves in the first film. Graves revealed at the end of the film that he was Grindelwald. Unfortunately, Farrell’s filming schedule for The Batman is keeping from reprising the role.

What a roller coster! What do you think of Mikkelsen as Grindelwald? Let us know in the comments.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is set to premiere July 15, 2022.
