For those not already familiar with the Fallout franchise, it is a long-running series of post-apocalyptic role-playing games. Players struggle to survive in an American wasteland that has been ravaged by nuclear blasts. Supplies are extremely limited and there are dangerous raiders and mutated creatures everywhere you turn. The expansive game catalog takes place over three centuries and is known for its signature retro-futuristic style.

If you have been watching the Fallout series on Prime and are looking for another way to experience the atomicpunk apocalypse, try Fallout Shelter.

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter is a building and resource management simulation game developed by Behavior Interactive and published by Bethesda Softworks. Though the game was released back in 2015, it has seen a recent surge in popularity due to the release of the brand-new Fallout series on Prime. This mobile spin-off puts you in charge of your very own fallout shelter called a Vault and it is not an easy job.

You start with a handful of dwellers, designed in the iconic Vault-Boy style, to place in your vault. From there you will need to immediately begin producing the basic necessary resources to survive including power, water and food. Construct buildings and put your survivors to work to start getting what you need. The power generator creates energy, the water treatment plant produces water and the diner, of course, makes food.

To get things rolling in Fallout Shelter, place survivors in each room and they will immediately get to work. Give it some time and you will be able to simply click to collect your resources. Every survivor has an ability stat bar or S.P.E.C.I.A.L. with Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck. Note that each room gives a bonus for each particular stat. If you place a survivor in the appropriate room, you will get bonus materials.

As your vault grows, new survivors will wander up to your door and you can invite them in. More dwellers unlock more rooms and eventually, you will be able to build all sorts of things.

There aren’t many survivors out in the wasteland though, so visitors are few and far between. You must look to other ways to grow your numbers. I will be vague about this, place a man and woman in the living quarters and boom you’ve got a baby. That’s right, you will be welcoming little bundles of joy into your growing community. After all, it is the end of the world and repopulating is the top priority.

Disasters Happen

Surviving the wasteland isn’t easy, even from the ‘safety’ of a Vault. Supplies are scarce out there and occasionally your vault will be attacked by desperate raiders. They will run through your Vault, drain your resources and attack your dwellers. Hopefully, your people are well equipped or the consequences could be dire. The raiders will eventually leave unless they are all killed in the Vault.

Cockroaches are infamously resilient enough to survive a nuclear blast. Even after the apocalypse, we cannot escape the damn bugs. In Fallout Shelter, Radroaches will burst from the floor and attempt to infest your colony. If they are in an empty room or your dwellers are not able to kill them, they will spread from one room to another, wreaking havoc.

The scene glows green at the diner where giant cockroaches have burrowed through the floor. Dwellers rush in to stomp them out.

Now that you have a diner, you are cooking with fire and that can be hazardous. Sometimes, fires happen, especially if you are rushing. Make sure your dwellers put them out as quickly as possible.

Wasteland

Sometimes, you can’t get everything you need from the Vault. Sadly, there will come a time when you have to send a poor unfortunate soul out into the Wasteland to bring resources back to the Vault. Equip a capable dweller with a weapon, armor and even a pet to increase their chances of success. Stimpaks offer healing and Radaway removes radiation so make sure to give them some of those too.

Dwellers brave enough to venture out can find Nuka-Cola Caps (Fallout currency), weapons, armor and more. The longer they stay out, the better the rewards. However, you want them to return alive or you get nothing and you are down a survivor (though there are ways to bring them back).

After you have built the Overseer’s Office, you can also send teams on quests that yield substantial rewards. So make sure to have a well-equipped team and send them out frequently.

Events and Crossovers

Fallout announced on their official X page that the new Fallout Shelter update will include a crossover featuring characters from the series. Invite your favorite characters from the show to your vault including Lucy MacLean, Maximus and The Ghoul. This exciting crossover features new themed rooms, outfits and weapons. There are even new quest locations based on the show.

Like any other mobile game, there is a shop asking for your hard-earned real-world money. You can buy everything from in-game currency to a robot named Mr. Handy that collects resources for you.

Our Adventure Ends Here

Fallout Shelter is a well-made, easy-to-look and easy-to-play mobile game. It can be a little intimidating and overwhelming in the very beginning but once you get the hang of things, it is a lot of fun. Be aware that this is a long-haul game that cannot be rushed. You can only do so much at one time and you have to essentially come back every day to make progress. It can sometimes feel like you’ve hit a wall. This type of gameplay is best suited for those patient gamers out there.

Of course, this is a great game for Fallout fans, but also anyone who enjoys resource management-style games. Even if you aren’t familiar with the Fallout franchise, it is still a high-quality simulation experience. Think about it, you can play Fallout Shelter when you inevitably rewatch season one of the series. This is especially exciting since you can now see your favorite characters from the show in the game.

Fallout Shelter is available for free in the Google Play Store and App Store.

Take it easy and play it safe, gamers.
