Welcome to this week’s installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. The video game market is oversaturated, and sometimes hidden gems can fall through the cracks. This is where we do all the digging for you and feature a new F2P game every week that we know you will enjoy. Let’s dive in!
The Call of Karen
The Basics
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that if something has anything to do with Cthulhu or HP Lovecraft that I am here for it. Which is why when I found The Call of Karen from Trumbus Games on PC through Steam, I knew I needed to play. Players take control of Karen, an unhappy 1950s housewife who doesn’t just have to take care of her ungrateful family but also the eldritch demon invading her home. The game is a simulator that has you interacting with everything from food and silverware to eldritch fighting vacuums.
Each day brings the same chores– make breakfast, clean up after your family and prepare dinner– but Cthulhu seems to have something else in mind. You think making bacon and eggs is hard on a normal day? Why not give it a try as all of your ingredients and cookware are floating away? Or how about having to order special bullets in order to soup up your vacuum in order to clean up some old god grim? Successfully make your way through a few strange days in order to face off against the big bad himself.

Why You Should Play
In all of the games I have played for the F2P Friday series, this one takes the cake. Why should you play? Because it is old god meets 1950s Karen, and I am here for it. The comedic approach to Cthulhu slowly taking over Karen’s home is hysterical to watch. Each day begins with it a feeling of “what weird thing could happen next?” Not to mention, Karen’s witty responses to her ungrateful husband and son had me rolling with laughter. It takes the misogyny aspects of the 1950s and adds all of the flavor of a modern day Karen.
The Call of Karen‘s charm comes with art style and music. The narrator for the story takes the form of a radio host (very 1950s) who slips in some old god language in here and there. The songs that play while you complete your daily chores will be stuck in your head forever. I don’t think I have ever wanted to buy the soundtrack of a game more than I do now. The play through is simple and short enough that you can enjoy this eldritch horror gem in an afternoon. So what are you waiting for?
