The Basics
Let’s get down to the basics. Lookouts is a romance visual novel that tells an old story in a new light. The game from Paranoidhawk is about two gay trans masc outlaws in the old west, finding refuge in each other, and a little hope for a better life.
The controls for Lookouts are mouse-based and only require you to click through dialogue or on boxes to progress the plot. Some sections include interactive elements but the controls are always explained. There is a section where you play a form of Blackjack that is done through text box options.

Why Should I Play?
So why should you play Lookouts? This game is a thoughtfully written, LGBTQ+ experience that calls to every person who has ever felt othered. The art and music are skillfully done, bringing the characters and setting to life but the writing is what pulled me in. No one in the town reads like a “background character” making the the queer-minded desert town feel like a true community.
This game made waves when it came out a couple of years ago for Gay Western Jam, but if you haven’t played the extended version yet it is well worth the time. Speaking of time, you should clear an afternoon to finish the story. Lookouts put the novel in a visual novel with a complex story that spans 45,000 words and an average reading time of five to six hours.
