Isles of Limbo

Echo facing off against enemies in Isle of Limbo.

The Basics

Isles of Limbo is a hack and slash combat styled game from Argonautics and released for PC on Steam in July of 2020. It follows the story of Echo, the guardian of the space between worlds. When spiteful wayward souls refuse to move onto the next life, they are trapped on the Isles of Limbo with Echo. It becomes his job to help guide them on their way by any means necessary. Using his special abilities, players will help Echo cleave and smash through the souls trapped in Limbo.

Gameplay mechanics in Isles of Limbo are simple but very rewarding. Echo is able to run about and dash to avoid damage. His dash uses one of the two crystals that recharges over time. He has two attacks to use against these spirits. A slash that arcs out forward and a slam that hits the area in front of him. Each ability has its own benefits, but the slam does knock spirits back. This can help Echo avoid damage. Each island features waves of enemies that will keep players on their toes. The ultimate goal is to clear through three isles and guide the spirits to the other side.

Why You Should Play

I recently found how much I enjoyed the hack and slash genre. There is just something about running around and slicing down your enemies. However, many go so far in-depth that it takes hours to really become comfortable with the gameplay. Isles of Limbo has the enjoyment of the genre without all the complicated extra abilities. This makes it easy to jump on and play whenever you feel that itch. But that doesn’t mean things are simple either. The onslaught of spirits and having to constantly be watching your back makes for an exciting time.

Echo is such an adorable protagonist surrounded by a visually beautiful world. Each of the three islands has its own style for the player to explore. Echo, the spirits and backgrounds are all created through through a mixture of 3D and handpainted game art. Isles of Limbo comes from a group of students at DigiPen Institute of Technology. They have done such impressive work bringing the game to life. Isles of Limbo over time has the ability to become a fully flushed out hack and slash. Be sure to support future game designers so they can continue to bring us games to love.
