Welcome to this week’s installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. The video game market is oversaturated, and sometimes, hidden gems fall through the cracks. This is where we do the digging for you and feature a new F2P game every week that we know you will enjoy. Let’s dive in!
*Content warning- This game contains jump scares and blood. It is not for the faint of heart.*
Cry of Fear
Cry of Fear is a psychological single-player and co-op horror game set in a deserted town filled with horrific creatures and nightmarish delusions. You play as a young man desperately searching for answers in the cold Scandinavian night, finding his way through the city as he slowly descends into madness.
Cry of Fear originally started as a Half-Life mod, set in the same vein as the classic survival horror games of old. After four years of hard work by the developer’s Team Psykskallar, picking up several modding awards on the way, Cry of Fear is now a free, standalone game for anyone to enjoy.

The Basics
A survival-horror game at its core, so players will be gathering resources, navigating terrain and dodging terrifying enemies in an atmosphere that would make Silent Hill residents uneasy. Outside of the terrifying atmosphere, Cry of Fear is your typical shoot-and-loot game. There are twenty-four unique weapons to find and utilize in your fight to survive.
The gameplay is straightforward in that regard but contains some flaws that require time to get adjusted to. I found the moments of janky combat easy to forgive when I considered that the game is both a decade old and still better than some AAA titles I’ve played in recent years.
Why Should I Play?
So why should you play Cry of Fear? If you are a horror fan, this is a must-play. The music is haunting, the atmosphere is horrifying, and the combat is usually tight. Although this game is on the older side, it is still one of the best indie horror games I’ve ever played, which is quite a feat. Horror is one of the largest and best genres of indie games out there, so standing out in the crowd is impressive.
RELATED: F2P Friday – Missed Messages
First, I love that this game is inclusive of up to four-person co-op….in theory. Because the game is so old, coming out in 2013, there isn’t much life on the servers anymore. If you have friends that you can rope into playing, the experience is worth it, but match-making solo is difficult. That being said, the solo campaign is outstanding, with ten-plus hours of gameplay in the main campaign. The huge gameplay time is thanks to its more than twenty unique endings.
Have a F2P game you’d like us to check out? Played this one before? We love to hear from you gamers in the comments! If you think you can survive the night, you can download Cry of Fear on Steam here!
