SyFy has renewed The Expanse for a new 13-episode season. This is great news for fans of the network’s high-end space opera, based on the series of books by James S.A. Corey. Though the show has not been a ratings giant by any stretch of the imagination (averaging just a .02), it has received a great deal of love from both critics and fans. And it is definitely the network’s best (and most expensive) attempt to move away from the low-budget monster mash-up and weird weather path it’s been on in recent years.
This renewal shows a great deal of support for The Expanse which is very expensive and has yet to capture an audience anywhere near that of SyFy’s previous science fiction champ, Battlestar Galactica. But, no doubt the network is gambling that the intricate political wrangling of Earth, Mars and The Belt (the show’s been called “Game of Thrones in space”) will prove sticky enough for current viewers who will then bring more eyeballs to the program through social media and word of mouth. This seems like a fair bet, as this kind of show is perfect for bingers who will like the twisty plot and beautiful VFX that have been (especially in season 2) a huge feature of the series.
Congrats to the creators, cast and crew! We’re looking forward the back half of Season 2 and for all you have in store for us down the line!
