Did anyone let their freak flag fly this past month? You did? Great. Me too. I try to do that daily. How about your SUPERHERO flag? I did that, too. What am I talking about? I’m talking about Marvel’s Superhero September push.
All throughout September, regular folks were sharing pics of their every day hero selves. I saw #SuperheroSeptember #superheroSept etc. all over the place. Of course, this was a marketing call to action as well. I’m sure that Marvel and Disney made plenty of money while this hash tag was gaining momentum. BUT, who cares? It was awesome to track what fans were doing. I loved fans posting pictures of themselves embracing their inner superhero.
Now, let me share with you a couple intimate moments of superhero-dom during Superhero September. It’s College Football season folks. College. Football. I’m a Florida Gator through thick and thin. I have a five-year-old godson named Greg. His dad is a crazy Gator too. So Greg will tag along with his dad to watch football games and deal with the adults screaming at the fun box.
Greg’s one of those super smart kids. Dare I say, genius (he is my godson after all). He’s very analytical about things, needs to know the why’s and how’s. He’s also possesses a rich and hilarious brain when it comes to make-em-ups and, of course, he loves his superheroes.
So, this past Saturday before the Gator game, I gave him a couple of cool Marvel gifts that I received, (Thanks Marvel!). Yes, they were gifts from Marvel but I did mention that they were MARVEL TOYS, people! MARVEL! And he is A FIVE-YEAR-OLD.
First up, a Captain America light-up helmet WITH A ROCKET LAUNCHER!
When I gave it to him, I got the scream I had hoped for and he knew he had to give me a hug even though that ‘s not one of his favorite things to do. But I got that hug, dammit! We were all out in the backyard with Greg, figuring how to shoot the nerf missiles from his helmet and having all kinds of fun. (I think he was having a great time shooting nerf missiles at our dog, Scout). Then the game started and the adults migrated in.
Greg usually entertains himself during games by watching a movie, playing Minecraft or even watching other people’s Minecraft videos on Youtube. I gotta admit, that’s what we thought he was doing during the first quarter. All of a sudden he comes running in with his Captain America helmet on and enveloped in the American Flag.
Wait, what?
The kid had gone into the garage and found our flag that we had out for Fourth of July. He knows enough about superheroes to understand the importance of a cape and that American Flag would be a perfect accoutrement to his Captain America helmet. Greg became Captain America, or as we named him Captain Gator America, and all of us football-crazed adults stepped away from our SEC Football insanity to look in awe at our little superhero. We even hit pause. This Captain Gator America was not a moment to rush through.
Halftime came and it was time for his next Marvel gift. Spiderman! This was exciting because I knew that Spiderman was his favorite superhero. I gave him a Spiderman action figure with web shooting abilities. He played and played. Once again targeting my dog Scout but this time with some web slinging action. Then, history repeated itself. Adults went in to see the second half of the Gator game.
After 15 minutes passed, I went check on Greg. I mean we’re not savages! I peeked outside and he was giving Spidey a tour of the back yard.
After a few minutes, he sat down with Spiderman. I decided not to bother him because I could tell they were in deep conversation. I wished I could hear what they were talking about but I couldn’t. I can only imagine what secrets Greg was telling Spidey or what important superhero intel Spidey was telling Greg. It was a beautiful moment to observe. They were having an adventure!
So, what’s the point of this post, you may ask? That Superhero September was a success? Well, sure. That’s true. But, more important, never forget how empowering it is to find your inner superhero, self, strength, weirdness whatever you want to call it. So do that! Unabashedly! DO IT EVERY DAY!
NOTE: After the football game ended, people left and it was my time to enjoy my Marvel gift. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack! Man, I played that CD and danced like nobody’s business. Out of respect for the neighbors, I did close the blinds. There are limits to the freak flag flying business. Unfortunately for my husband, he saw me getting down to some grooves. I’m pretty sure his eyeballs hurt after a while.
