About emaqi

Today we took a look at the new digital manga marketplace, emaqi. Living outside Japan can be a barrier to obtaining timely translations of running fan-favorite series and a downright roadblock if you read more obscure works.

The site is produced by Orange, a company that distributes digital manga, including these translated works, through its digital store, emaqi. The people behind emaqi are fans who care about the manga and understand that for a true localization to work, there has to be context beyond just the translation.

Promised upcoming features:
・Personal recommendation to maximize encounters with unseen masterpieces
・Curation by manga lovers: Introductions to work by super fans or authors/artists
・Manga trailers that provide a visual look at the work beyond the cover

The Selection

The site selection is already large at launch, featuring approximately 6,000 volumes of manga from 13 publishers with more released weekly. Emaqi features both titles previously released in English and works exclusively translated by the Orange team for the site.

Not sure about the original series or new to manga? Both emaqi’s original works and partner series support a “try it out” feature that lets the reader scroll through a sample of the manga for free, so there’s no buyer’s remorse. I was also impressed with the vertical presentation of the pages which made reading the works feel intuitive. The modern, web-comic style layout will translate seamlessly to an app format in the future.
