Now that the hype dust has settled, we can sit back and talk about the games that we are most excited to play. Even with the next-gen consoles on the horizon, the big AAA game developers and indies studios brought out their best games to E3 2019 this year. Xbox announced 60 games at their press conferences, Square Enix, Bethesda and Ubisoft had a strong showing. And of course, Nintendo closed it out with their impressive catalog of games. Going through the exhaustive list of games that were showcased this year took some time, but here are my top 10 must-play games.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

The demo I played at E3 managed to feel like a brand-new game while honoring the spirit of the original PlayStation game. Combat is in real time, making each encounter just a little more challenging. The boss fights will require a bit more multitasking than the original. The remake looks gorgeous and it will undoubtedly be on everyone’s list for Game of the Year. Personally, I’m looking forward to the Cait Sith reunion.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released on March 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4

Borderlands 3

Based on the demo, Borderlands 3 is going to be every bit of an insane looter shooter as you would expect. For 10 minutes I was running around while the Children of the Vault threw everything at me. The mechanics are similar to Borderlands and Borderlands 2, but ability management will be key to customizing the way you play. They introduced the new character Moze at E3 and she is a formidable character with a powerful mech. If you are a fan of the Borderlands series, I don’t think you will be disappointed in this game.

Borderlands 3 will be released on September 13, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.

Darksiders Genesis

The gameplay for Darksiders Genesis is very different than what we’ve seen in the first three titles of the series, and that’s a welcome change. The top-down, Diablo-esque style is incredibly fun and the movement and combat mechanics are straight out of the Darksiders games. You play Strife, the Fourth Horseman, and War, the main character from Darksiders. Together you run through dungeon levels and complete missions for the Council while fighting off hordes and level bosses. This is a prequel to the Darksiders series, so we’ll hopefully get more backstory on these characters and more in-depth lore.

Darksiders Genesis will be released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

The big surprise for me at E3 was the absence of Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It was shown during the Xbox Press Briefing, but there wasn’t a playable demo during their big showcase. Either way, this platformer/Metroidvania game is one that should be on everyone’s list. A sequel to the critically acclaimed Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori is back and he will be facing new foes in new stunning environments. Ori and the Blind Forest was an emotional journey, and I expect nothing less from this title. If you haven’t played the first game, then you owe it to yourself to pick it up before the release of Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be released on February 11, 2020 for PC and Xbox One.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

It’s time to go Nazi hunting again. This time you and a friend will play Jess and Soph Blazkowicz in this co-op shooter. Together you will fight of Nazi’s in 1980s Paris as you search for you father, BJ Blazkowicz. Expect a lot of chaos as you go through the streets of Paris where Nazis are at every corner. The demo I played was challenging and you will have to work well with your partner to complete objectives. Communication will be crucial and so will having a heavy arsenal.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood will be released on February 11, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch.

Cyberpunk 2077

This game has Keanu Reeves in it. And it’s cyberpunk. These are the only reasons one should have to play this game. I suppose the story and the unique setting should also be considered.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on April 16, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.

Gods and Monsters

This is an interesting game coming from Ubisoft. After Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Gods and Monsters takes us on a different journey through Greek Mythology. The art style feels like it could be the next Legend of Zelda game, and that appeals to me. In the Ubisoft Press Conference, Senior Producer Marc-Alexis Cote explained that while they worked on Odyssey they wanted to develop a game that focused on mythology. He accredits these stories of “ancient gods and their misadventures” as being the inspiration behind Gods and Monsters.

Gods and Monsters will be released on February 25, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.

Blair Witch

I’m not into horror games, but The Blair Witch Project made a lasting impression on me when it was released in 1999 so now I need to play this game. Blair Witch will take us back to Burkittsville where it all began. You will play an ex-cop who goes into the woods to find a missing boy. Be prepared because the jump scares will be abundant. My only concern is that the dog makes it out alive.

Blair Witch will be released on August 30, 2019 for PC, Xbox One.

Dragon Quest Builders 2

Dragon Quest Builders was one of my favorite Dragon Quest spin-off titles. The JRPG elements mixed in with Minecraft-style building and crafting made this an incredible game to play. After playing the Dragon Quest Builders 2 demo, it looks like we’re in for another enjoyable experience. As an apprentice builder you will need to rebuild the world city by city, all while fighting off the evil Children of Hargon. Seems simple enough.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be released on July 12, 2019 for PlayStation 4.

The Outer Worlds

This was a game that stood out to me during the Xbox Press Briefing. The game is set in the space colony of Halcyon, a place owned and operated by corporations. While it seems that these corporations having been ruling Halcyon unchallenged, someone new has appeared and they are threatening to disrupt everything. Based on the trailer, it seems that you will be able to play this character however you see fit. Whether you choose to be a hero, a villain, or a psychopath, your actions will probably have serious consequences.

The Outer Worlds will be released on October 25, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
