While E3 2019 had a really great showing as far as new games and updates to previously announced games go, the amount of female representation was the lowest we have seen in years. The lovely ladies over at Feminist Frequency did a wonderful job of breaking down the exact percentage here. While several games like Watch Dogs: Legion and Marvel’s Avengers will allow you to play as female players, they are not the main protagonists. I hope next year we will have a bigger showing of female driven games, but until then here is a look at four games featured during E3 that feature strong female protagonists.
Cris Tales
I don’t know how many times I am going to say that for me, Cris Tales was the unsung hero of the PC Gaming Show conference. Modus Games‘s love letter to the JRPG (Japanese role playing game) genre features the female protagonist Crisbell. She sets off with her friends to stop the evil plans of the Empress. The game features turn based combat and the ability to collect players to join your team, however Crisbell is the main character. It will be wonderful getting to experience her journey as she battles monsters and controls her time bending powers.
Cris Tales is set to release fully in 2020 for PC.
Gears 5
We learned during E3 2018 that Gears 5 was going down a new path in it’s story line. The new story will follow Kait Diaz as she delves into the mysteries of her past and come to terms with what might possibly be her future. This will be the first time in the Gears of War franchise that a female protagonist is front and center. From all of the trailers we have seen, this is going to be a journey that will take players through the psychological horror that is the terrors in our own minds.
Gears 5 is set to release on September 10, 2019 for PC and Xbox One.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
For fans of the beloved Wolfenstein franchise, this installment is bringing a lot of firsts. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is bringing us not just one, but two main female protagonists. The player takes control of either Jess or Soph Blazkowicz, the Nazi fighting children of B.J. Blazkowicz. The story line will follow the sisters through Paris as they search for their father. Friends can play together as both of the sisters or take the game on solo. In the trailer released during E3 we got a better look at the sisters, who are just amazing.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood is releasing July 26, 2019 for PC, PS4, Xbox one, and the Nintendo Switch.
Gods and Monsters
Ubisoft never ceases to amaze me. While I was really hoping for a new Assassins Creed announcement, I was pleasantly surprised for Gods and Monsters. Players will take control of Fenyx, the warrior the gods turn to when all else fails. Players will get to explore the Isle of the Blessed as they learn to control the new powers bestowed upon them by the Greek gods. We will get to see some of the most deadly of mythical creatures before facing off against Typhoon himself.
Gods and Monsters is set to release on February 25, 2020 for PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PS4. You can get your pre-order now over on the Ubisoft website!
